Victory-deciding rules question

By Solan, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Tonight my play group faced our arch-nemesis, the Lord of Terror himself, Glaaki! Just like every time (except for one) we failed to seal him away and wound up in Epic Battle against him. During the last round we had the Epic Battle card Dangerous Plot, and we had one Investigator who failed to get any successes. Of course that Investigator being devoured raised the terror track by 2, which put it at eleven, but if allowed to finish the round we would have taken Glaaki down before he had a chance to attack. It says for his attack, "Raise the terror level by one. If it is 10 or more, all investigators are devoured."

Now if I'm understanding the wording correctly, you only check the terror track to see if all investigators are devoured when it comes around to Glaaki's attack; prior to that it doesn't matter what the terror track is at, so we DID win during our attack for that final round. Correct interpretation or not, in your opinion?

I'm pretty sure that the investigators would not be devoured until Glaaki attacks. So Congratulations!

I agree with Veet. Way to go!aplauso.gif

This is a similar question to "if I spend my final clue token to attack Nyarlathotep, am I devoured?" To which, I would say "no" because the check to see if you're devoured occurs during his attack. Even if that weren't the case, the card does say you're devoured after attacking, so if you kill Glaaki at the same time as he kills the defending force, it won't matter to him because he is still dead.

As a side note, keep in mind that the 11th terror increase technically adds a doom token to the doom track. But again, since Glaaki was devoured first, then all that receives the doom token is a giant cosmo-snail corpse.

On a related side note, would Glaaki (any others GOOs raise Terror during final combat) heal if Terror were already at 10 and would go up?

Yes; clearly the "discard an ally" effect still applies as the terror level increases during final combat (part of Glaaki's attack depends on it). Based on that, there is nothing to suggest that there's an exception to other "terror level" effects occurring during final combat.

ARRGGHH! I never even considered that the Terror Track going up to eleven shoudl have technically added a doom token! The Epic Battle card Dangerous Plan makes it sound like an Investigator is devoured as soon as he fails to get a sucess on his combat check. If that's the case, then Glaaki was NOT devoured first, since the failing Investigator did so before the final blow could be struck . . .

Oh, I was picturing the Noble Sacrifice card. Yes, sorry—in your case, unless you could whittle off that additional doom token with the remaining investigators, it sounds like you were finished...
