Gaining Talent twice ?! What happens?

By Brother Techmarine Harkus, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Hey guys,

first of all i want to apologize if i make any mistakes, but since i'm not a native speaker ...

Recently i've created a Sororitas from Schola Progenium and it appeared that they gain the Pistol Training (Las) twice, as well as Melee Training (Primitive) twice. Are those twice gained talents just wasted or is there any solution to this problem?

Greetz,

Hark from Germany

As far as I'm aware, Brother Harkus, yes unfortunately duplicate talents during character-creation, at least in DH, are wasted. It's a shame, I know. sad.gif

Indeed they are wasted, but you can manke hous rules that says otherwise ;) It's all up yo the GM

It wouldn't be too hard to just carry over the rule from Rogue Trader for how to handle duplicate skills and talents during character creation; see the sidebar Skills and Talents: the Sequel on page 15 if you've got the book available. The group I play with was pretty much already doing this prior to RT being published.

If i got this right, it says that i should choose a Talented (Skill X) Talent instead of gaining the same talent twice?

So i choose Talented (Forbidden Knowledge (Warp) instead of the second Melee (Primitive) ?

This is not DH standard and would need GM approval before using.

I'd suggest this with the added condition that if either of the places that gave a talent let you chose between multiple talents then you must make your best effort to prevent them doubling up and only get talented/+10 if you have no way to avoid doubling up.

For example in this case getting melee weapon training twice would let you take a talented. But getting las pistol training twice would not because the progenium lets you chose between las and SP pistol training, instead you would have to take SP pistols.

I have to agree with ItsUncertainWho's point. Check with your GM to insure that s/he'll allow for this rule in their game.

Otherwise, correct. I would suggest taking the Talented (X) talent for any Basic Skill or an Advanced Skill you will begin play with. Otherwise, the talent will be of little use to you, as it does not count as skill training for Advanced Skills.

Adepta Sororitas beginning trained skills:

  • Common Lore (Imperial Creed)
  • Literacy
  • Performer (Singer)
  • Speak Language (Low Gothic)
  • Trade (Copyist)

Schola Progenium beginning trained and basic skills:

  • Literacy - Trained
  • Speak Language (High Gothic) - Trained
  • Speak Language (Low Gothic) - Trained
  • Common Lore (Administratum) - Basic
  • Common Lore (Ecclesiarchy) - Basic
  • Common Lore (Imperial Creed) - Basic; moot as it is trained above.
  • Common Lore (Imperium) - Basic
  • Common Lore (War) - Basic
  • Scholastic Lore (Philosophy) - Basic

However, given your Schola Progenium training allows for you to either choose Pistol Training (Las) or Pistol Training (SP) while as a Sororitas you get Pistol Training (Las) automatically, I would recommend you to take the Pistol Training (SP) since there's a choice to be had. Otherwise, the second instance of the Melee Weapon Training (Primitive) talent might be exchangeable with your GM's permission.

Edit: Of course, Bilateralrope hit part of the points I was introducing here in my response. aplauso.gif
