A Question of Scale (Hordes Rules)

By TheMadGM, in Deathwatch

Someone brought up in another post:

2. We used minis, but ran into issues of scale. How big is a horde? Our GM used 25m squares for the chapel fight, which put the entire area on his game mat, but I didn't like moving my Space Wolf one square a turn at a run. He used a mini to show us the *center* of a horde, but it wasn't clear where the edges where. I'm not sure that DW will fit well with 1m squares.

I checked the FAQ real quick, and discovered:

2. Is there a modifier to hit a Horde?

A. For the purposes of Final Sanction, consider all Hordes to be Enormous, meaning that the Space Marines gain a +20 to hit them.

Anyone have any other ways of working with this issue? I was considering using a 5"x5" cardboard template to show where the horde's "area" is, but that seems a little too tight if the magnitude description of "tens, scores or hundreds" of individual creatures is right. :

During the battles with the Hordes I drew maps that were a city block or more in size. Instead of minis I used colored chips representing "radar blips". Red or orange chips were enemies, green chips were allied marines, and blue chips were allied PDF. The chips simply represented the relative locations of the horde/marine/PDF unit in question. When it came to movement I just told asking player how far he could go as a Half move, Full move, or run. It was abstract (just like the horde rules themselves) and worked really well. We never really needed to know a specific scale for the map (although it was probally around 25m per hex or so.

The players liked the "radar overlay" look of the battle mat and also appreciated that a lot more area was represented then on a typical 25mm scale map. As a side note, I am thinking about using Epic 40K minis for these kind of battles in the future and regular minis for encounters without hordes or vehicles etc.
