Assaults, LOS and squad building.

By Tretiak, in Tide of Iron

Hello,

I just bought TOI, and after fiddling with the first scenario, a few questions popped up:

1. After an assault, can the active squad enter the target hex if it has eliminated the opposition, even if it didn't "win" the assault ?

(not scoring the required hits)

2. Is a squad that has just entered a razor wire hex, assault an adjacent hex, and be eligible to enter if it wins the assault ?

3. How is LOS resolved when it touches a hex corner (not it's side) ?

Oh, one more thing...

4. If you control both of a nation's divisions, can you assemble a squad with infantry belonging to both divisions ?

1. I would imagine that even if you scored less hits in total than the defender, you could still enter if there are no defenders left to hold the hex.

2. see page 33 forth bullet point down. It says you can't even assault that activation since hitting razor wire stops you. Thats the intent of razor wire.

3. the pics on page 24 show LOS from a corner to corner I suggest you study these closer.

Obviously not, per page 34 #8 "If the defender's number of hits equals or exceeds

that of the attacker, the assault is unsuccessful. The active unit and any supporting units

are fatigued, and the Assault action is over."

When it's over, it's over.

Unfortunatly that excelent document is not Official, and thus can not be consideret as part of the rules.
If the designers want the rules to match their intent they should amend the rules or at least issue offical errata. Not following the rules is usualy considered cheating, Even if you are the designer ;-)

But it is an excelent piece of work. Well worth reading through for anyone having troubles with the rules. Contains a lot of good variant rules from the designers of the game as well.

Actually, some of the answers in the RCD are official (most are noted), but yes, the RCD is unofficial. Someday it is hoped that it will be labeled "Official" once the designer gives it a look-see and an "okay". Overall, the RCD is true to the game and should be very helpful.

I can not realy see a comment on BGG as official errata, even if its from someone who participated in the design. If the designers want to change what they wrote they should amend the rules or alt least provide errata on the official home page.

Sigh. Most of what is in the RCD is just there to help a player understand a rule. NOT to change a rule. Thus no official blessing needs to come from FFG. Think about it. When you see someone playing the game wrong and you know how a particular rule works, would you not try to correct them? That's the essence of the RCD. It just gives further understanding of what the rulebook was trying to say in the first place. Your comments about the RCD are only serving to drive away newcomers from a source that would help them grasp the rules.

And that is why I think its great reading, you can get a much better understanding of the rules, and there are some seriously good houserules in there. Both of which I stated earlier. I do recomend the file, and BGG as a whole. The Only thing it is not; is official.

But a few of us acutaly plays this with strangers once or twice a year. Then it becomes important what rules we play under.
