Lethal Counterattack

By pateras, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

If an opponent does a military attack against me, and I use Lethal Counterattack to kill all of his characters, am I considered to have won the challenge?

And is there anything stopping me from using Lethal Counterattack in a melee during a challenge that I am not a part of?

Well, if there are no characters participating in a challenge, it ends immediately without resolution, so you need to declare at least one defender before playing Lethal Counterattack for the challenge to continue after it resolves. Also, a challenge can not be won by a player who counts a strength of less than 1 (or who has no participating characters), so you will need to count a strength of 1 to win the challenge.

You can use Lethal Counterattack in any military challenge. You can even kill off your own attacking characters if you had some reason to want them dead.

The challenge can continue even if there are currently no attacking characters? I guess that means you can win the challenge as the defender even if there aren't any attacking characters. Also, you could add the Greatjon to an attack even after your other attacking characters are removed.

As long as there is 1 participating character the challenge continues. In this case, if you declare defenders and then play Lethal Counterattack (or use any other effect to get rid of the attackers/make them leave the challenge) you'll probably win as the defender.

When I used this card, it caused a lot of controversy. Its language is very specific: it doesn't say kill all participating attacking characters, it says kill all attacking characters. Does this mean it wipes out the entire attacking side's characters (participating, not-participating, kneeling, standing, etc)??

All attacking characters means all characters that are attacking in the current challenge, either because they have been decared as attackers or because they joined the attack by other means. Otherwise it would have to be "all characters controlled by the attacking player" or something. I really don't see how you could interpret the wording otherwise.

Simply comes down to the fact that "attacking characters" means "all characters with a status of 'attacking' in the current challenge" rather than "all characters controlled by the attacking player."
