So when I ran Joyous Choir & the bounty hunter gets sniped I made a point of emphasizing a list of bounties. So, I started writing out a series of profiles that the acolytes might try to pursue in between missions from their exalted Inquisitor. So far they haven't had the opportunity to pursue many of the contracts...but I would like to bulk up on some ideas before they graduate to trusted acolytes and gain a little more leeway in how they pursue their tasks.
I think these side quests could serve to both kill time (giving me more time to craft cunning and malicious plans), line the acolytes pockets for some of the more expensive stuff later, and teach them to rely more on themselves and the resources they can conjure up for when down the road I have their Inquisitor falsely accused of being a heretic radical and they have to go on the lamb.
Here are a few that I dreamed up. I don't have specifics, I normally just come up with a framework and fill out the details either on the fly or prior to when I have the acolytes go after them.
1) A high-level adept who has been popping some brain-boosting drugs has gone underground and has been brokering off administratum secrets to the highest bidder.
2) A former con-artist swindled his way into untold riches, then disappeared. He used the fortune to buy himself the Planetary Governorship of a small backwater feudal world. The riches he stole were those of his two other partners. The acolytes will track him down to the world and then get stranded there, having to deal with the situation as best they can till help can arrive.
3) One that is a little TOO easy at first - for whatever crimes he committed, the target just happens to turn himself in the day before they get there. But it isn't the acolytes hounding his heels that cause this sudden crisis of confidence: it is the hit that has been put out on him. The acolytes are offered part of the bounty by the Magistratum to escort him to a nearby prison planets or Adeptus Arbites facility. The acolytes have to defend him as assassins come to try to take down the target.
4) A brutal murdered who has been killing his way across a hive world finally has a price on his head. Similar to the one above where the acolytes will have to compete for this bounty but for two things...one is that the bounty is dead-or-alive...and two is that the bounty has been going through radical and highly illegal gene-modifications.
So what are your guys thoughts? And also, do you have any good ideas?
