Could toughness (like Gromril Armor) cancel damage 'taken' - it says all noncombat damage also goes through assign& apply - im referring to Thyrus Gorman or Arrer Boys.

Yes. In one of the threads it was answered that take damage just means the source of dmg is the card itself. Or something like that. It's still normal damage.
