Could toughness (like Gromril Armor) cancel damage 'taken' - it says all noncombat damage also goes through assign& apply - im referring to Thyrus Gorman or Arrer Boys .

Yes. In one of the threads it was answered that take damage just means the source of dmg is the card itself. Or something like that. It's still normal damage.
