Started RTL and need help

By Garder2, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi

We just stated our first RTL game yesterday. I think we have a strong group, but we still got our ass kicked.

Our party concist of the following heroes:

Brother Glyr with Tough

Nanok with Tiger Tatoo

Laura of Bloodwood with Born to the Bow

Eldrich the wise with Prodigy

A rather strong party I think. Our plan is to upgrade Brother Glyr into a tank, Nanok into a high damage dealer, and keep Laura and Eldrich safe behind the frontline giving out damage.

The plan is to upgrade them this way:

Brother Glyr is to get Taunt and Bear Tatoo (For the Grapple)

Nanok will get Weapons Master (2 free surges) and all the trait dices he can get.

Laura is to get Precision (ignore one model i LOS)

Eldrich shall have Spiritwalker

The plan is to keep Glyr and Nanok in the frontline making sure nothing gets past them. Laura and Eldrich stays behind but can still deal full damaged via there skills. Does this sound like a good plan?

Also, we were lucky enough to draw The Twins rumor on the first draw. What would be the best to Avatar upgrades to remove from the OL hand? He is playing the Spider Queen...

Copper level is very hard on the heroes. The secret is knowing when to flee. If you get past the first level, and get the chest on the second you can count that as a victory and get out of the dungeon.

Sorry, but IMO you were not lucky to draw The Twins. That rumor is exceptionally hard at best, broken at worst.

I find that plans are all fine and dandy until you enter a dungeon, at which point they thoroughly disintegrate. That's a nice enough template, I guess, but most groups employee a runner to snap up treasures and activate glyphs and such, and everything will have to adapt on each dungeon level.

I'm not sure if the luck was actually on your side. ;) That's a pretty tough rumor, and rumors, in general, are not the best route to go while you're in copper mode. If you've just started the game, I'd stay far away from them, really. The heroes usually get beat down in copper, and you can expect to get a serious beating on a rumor level.

I highly recommend reading this regarding RtL strategy for heroes:

Hi

1. Laura of Bloodwood with Born to the Bow

2. Brother Glyr is to get Taunt and Bear Tatoo (For the Grapple)

3. The plan is to keep Glyr and Nanok in the frontline making sure nothing gets past them. Laura and Eldrich stays behind but can still deal full damaged via there skills. Does this sound like a good plan?

4. Also, we were lucky enough to draw The Twins rumor on the first draw. What would be the best to Avatar upgrades to remove from the OL hand? He is playing the Spider Queen...

1. Laurel is a weakness not a strength (3 CT for an 8/1), but the party is overall very strong - although I would definitely recommend Nanok aimed as a runner rather than a damage dealer. You have Laurel and Landrec that will be good damage dealers already and Nanok with Tiger Tattoo is an excellent runner and quickly very tough as well with a couple of dice upgrades..

2. Bear Tattoo has been removed (FAQ pg13).
Get the FAQ, now.

Stop, get the FAQ. Now. Read it three times. Then read it three more. Then read it again before your next session.

3. That's a tactic, not a plan (in fact bears little resemblance to a plan), and needs to be adaptable once you make contact with the enemy. As far as tactics go it is an acceptable start but not much more than that. Your OL will work around it fairly quickly if he is halfway competent.

4. That's not luck, that's foolishness (rumours are bad early on, because they will tempt you to overcommit in a dungeon and concede far too many CT*) and the Twins is not an easy rumour to complete. Having said that, the best SQ upgrade is the one that puts two trap cards aside (into my parlour?) though if it costs 15 or less a smart OL will have bought it with their starting freebies.

*RtL has an exponential curve at times. Getting ahead early allows you to buy more upgrades and get further ahead faster. This varies at times through the campaign as some upgrades have greater effect than others and of course the other side will get their own upgrades that improves them enough to rebalance. But it is especially bad early on if the heroes let the OL get a fast start.

Thanks for all the help :)
