Medicine, the Redheaded Stepchild skill

By Doc, the Weasel, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Why don't any careers have Medicine listed? You'd think that at least the Barber-Surgeon would have it, rather than First-Aid.

Was it supposed to alway be an out-of-career skill purchase? It's not that powerful that it has to be so hard to get.

Medicine is an advanced skill and will, probably, be on the more advanced careers and barber-surgeons are more on the butcher/healer side then delicate surgery.

Yes, it is advanced, but it is currently the only skill that is never a career skill.

This is another area where the lack of advanced careers in the core set is a bit frustrating. Let’s hope that the Winds of Magic will include Physician as an advanced career (I remember that the first developer’s diary told us that Apothecary and Grave Robber will be some of the included careers, so Physician doesn’t seem to be completely out of the league) to plug this hole and offer a first career that has Medicine available as a career skill…

Pff. And I though Medecine was already underrated, I haven't noticed it's not even in any career skill list. It's twice more underrated than I though...

Considering it would take 8 advances to train the skill non-career, if you really want Medicine, you might as well transition to 'Physician' - when it turns up...

Yup. It feels almost ironic to me when I read references to the skill in some of the adventures: “Detecting schlaf would require a hard Nature Lore or a medium difficulty Medicine check” etc.

Gosh, I didn't even realised that either.

I'm not sure if I must laught or cry.

I just hope it's not only found in Advanced Careers. It would be the only Advanced skill that is.

Seems unlikely though. The only candidate that I could think of would be Apothecary – in that career one could maybe switch First Aid for Medicine…

Imo Medicine could/should have been an option within the 'Student' career. In fact the whole Student Career could be houseruled for various 'types'.

i.e 'Medical Students' could replace Folklore with Medicine. 'Engineering Students' could replace Folklore with Tradecraft(Engineering). However, the RAW doesn't allow it.

Hope that whets your whistle! The Winds of Magic set is excellent by the way. Love the mutation rules and cards! aplauso.gif

Ah, that means that my barber-surgeon player will need to either take an out-of-career advance in education, or take a detour via another career that offers education as a skill – student might be a nice fit, or Apothecary (probably even better), since I would guess that an Apothecary also has education among the main skills…

Apothecary does not have Education as a Career Skill...Sorry, looks like you will be taking that out-of career advance! In fact, the career that most matches up with Physician (short of having First Aid as a career skill) is Scribe! They are very close... Their cards look almost identical except the Physician requires First Aid, the advances have a slight difference, and there is one more focus slot on the Physican card.

Hope that helps you out! happy.gif

So now it finally is a career skill, but only for an advanced career. And you have to jump through hoops to qualify for it.

Why make it so hard to get this as a career skill? It's not that powerful a skill.

As I wrote earlier the natural route to Physician is Student.

If you claim to be a medical student then the GM could allow you to train First Aid at normal cost as per p27 of the GM's Toolkit.

I agree that Student works very well. Especially with the GM Toolkit rule applied.

So it works well if you use an optional rule. Otherwise, there is only one career that allows you to train both Education and First Aid (Initiate).

I still don't know why it's so hard to get a skill that really isn't all that. Sure it's handy, but I could do a lot more with all those advances.

Medicine can help with long term care (as well as over night rest) and long term care can really help with getting rid of critical wounds, which is pretty hard in this game. Don't under estimate how detrimental having lingering critical wounds can be.

Without medicine, a PC can realistically only get rid of 1 critical wound per day

Due to the relative difficulty of getting medicine, those with the skill will be able to charge highly for their services, as so few people will have it,so in that sense it is worth the effort; its an easy way for the PC to make a comfortable amount of money between adventures
