Greetings folks! As a parting gift, I wanted to share how I ended up managing “storage and transportation” of my Xwing collection. It might give some ideas to people figuring out theirs.
First the description, then pictures.
I collect only Rebels, Empire and Scum, but have a… fairly large collection (about 60 ships per each faction, only 1 of each of the large bases, but several 6-strong wings of most popular ships). I jumped in X-wing about sep-oct 2019 and picked up the conversion sets, some core sets and mostly looked for discounted 1.0 ships over amazon and ebay (there is no FFG vendor where I live). I did pick up several 2.0 ships, also the epic expansion and huge ships conversion set (though I don’t own any Huge ship) and the environment cards and such.
From the beginning I kept all the ship’s plastic covers I could and cut its outline as to keep them as “shields” around the ships and thus allowing me to store them in bulk in boxes and not worry about them getting damaged. It has worked very well. For those I got without the plastic cover, Sir Willibald’s boxes were a godsend. As for the rest of the maddening lot of bit’s and pieces this game has, I went shopping to a card box boxes whole seller, spent $5 and came home with ton of different options. MVP where a long “macaroon” boxes that fitted dials perfectly. I also asked a friend to 3d print some token holders I found on etsy.
Ok, so what I did was I converted the core set boxes into faction specific “full game boxes”, complete with movement templates, dice, damage cards, obstacles, etc, with space to carry a handful of ships each. I will usually have an assorted “classic” selection of ships in each box, as to allow for a quick and easy game to happen (just pick the faction box and go) or I might change the ships if I would (in a non covid world) go somewhere to play with a specific list. This has become very comfortable as I did meet with some friends before pandemic got bad, and I simply took the “Imperial” and “Rebel” boxes and had everything we needed in them. The Rebel faction box carries 5x Xwings, 2x Ywings, 3x Awings, 2x Bwings, 1x Uwing and a YT 1300, more than enough to play a ton of lists and showcase the rebels.
I put all the pilot cards (the ones not in the “faction box” in one, separated by faction and ship, and all the upgrades on the other, including devices, and such. I used a 1.0 core set box to store all the “nonstandard” game pieces like the epic card and maneuvers, environment cards, huge ships bases and tool, etc. It’s like the “advanced game box”, hehehe.
Then I put all the dials, bases and plastic bases and pegs in the “macaroon” boxes, and with the ships, all in the big “cake” box. All sorted by faction.
And that is it. I can quickly grab one of the 3 faction boxes to play, or I can change it’s content to bring a specific list and leave the rest at home.

Pic 1: all the “faction” boxes plus the “advanced game” box. I used duplicate cards to close the lid’s gap in a fashionable way.
Pic 2: close-up of the Rebels “ faction” box
Pic 3: Rebel faction box without lid. Top light brown is the macaron box that holds dials and bases. The 2 black “boxes” on the left are a black cardboard box I carfted to carry the pilot cards, damage deck and dice; the smaller one bellow is the token holder. Then you can see the some of the ships piled-up.
Pic 4: same as above, but without covers or angled to give better visuals. The Falcon is wrapped between 2 of the two-ship packs pieces that came with large plastic rectangles, plus some bubble wrap.
Pic 5: close-up of the dials and bases storage and carry. Those macaroon boxes were a big find and so very cheap.
Pic 6: close-up of the black cardbox I crafted holding dice, pilot cards and damage deck.
Pic 7 and 8: close up of the ship’s plastic “shields”. I’m quite happy a lot of that plastic did not went to waste, allows to pack the ships very tightly but still safely.
Pic 9 , 10 and 11: upgrade cards and pilot card boxes. I crafted the inner divisions. Nice and simple.
Pic 12: the ship’s “bulk” storage boxes. I’m still working on improving the labeling. I wish I had kept the wraps of the conversion sets, they would look awesome on the lids… Will probably use some duplicate cards like decorate and identify them.
Pic 13: Inside the Rebels bulk box. On the Left all the dial and bases on the macaroon boxes, on the left my ships. Medium and large bases go in this box too.
Pic 14: all the boxes for a family portrait.
That is it. Thanks for reading. Any suggestion on improving is always welcomed.
