I actually managed to play a game for the first time in ages whilst on holiday. It was also first ever game with Highland cards.
I drew the Valkyrie and after acquiring 6 lives (can't remember how that happened) I ended up with the Heromartyr.
I had thought the "pick up killed followers" ability was going to be a bit useless but all of a sudden I was a pretty hard nut
and could take on bigger enemies safe in the knowledge I would not lose a life.
I did feel a bit shabby though and I am not sure that the ability was fully thought through.
In addition, I had the Princess. Now this has not been mentioned yet in this thread but when you take her back to the Castle you get
3 gold and then she is placed on the discard pile....but wait a minute. Discard=Killed? So I can have her back again.
Perhaps the reward was to bring her back to be executed rather than just returned safely..
I really did feel bad about that one on so only did it the once.
I think for simplicity it is easier to regard discard=killed but you could just rely on common sense/vote to determine killed vs wondered off.
The wording on the ability is:
Whenever a Follower is killed you may resurrect it and keep it as your Follower instead of allowing it to being placed on the discard pile. You may only resurrect each Follower once per turn.
If we try to interpret the possible meanings by rephrasing slightly:
a) Whenever another player's Follower is killed you may resurrect it and keep it as your Follower instead of allowing it to being placed on the discard pile. You may only resurrect each Follower once per turn.
This does not seem to make sense as the comment about only once per turn would never apply.
b) Whenever a Follower is killed you may resurrect it and keep it as your Follower instead of allowing it to being placed on the discard pile. You may only resurrect each Follower once per game .
This seems to make more sense and is easy enough to implement. A Follower can only be resurrected once, preventing infinite loops, but still gives the Valkyrie a useful ability to make use of.
I cannot think of any instance where you would normally see a Follower die twice in one turn so that would seem to be the errata.
In the old 1st/2nd edition there were many cases of abilities that were worded incorrectly or just laughably wrong.
Let's hope the FAQ comes soon and clears this up.
