campaign rules?

By GlassJaw, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Not sure if this is the best forum for this but I'm slowly getting into X-Wing after a long hiatus. Used to be a somewhat competitive player but more interested in casual play (for the moment).

Anyway, are there any campaigns (or new missions), official or otherwise, for X-Wing? Given the Star Wars setting, it feels like a natural fit to bring in some RPG elements.

Thanks!

Closest thing to official missions are the Scenarios included in the Epic Battles expansion which could be strung together into a series for an ad hoc campaign. There's also the Environment cards in the card packs (Hotshots and Aces, Fully Loaded, Never Tell New the Odds) which spice up the standard match by mixing up obstacles/devices/effects/penalties/bonuses aside from the standard 6 obstacles.

Unofficially, you can look up HOTAC (Heroes Off The Aturi Cluster) which was a fan made campaign for 1e. It was pretty robust when I played it around wave 7 (maybe? It was a while ago) of 1e, but I'm not sure how thoroughly it has been revamped for 2e.

HOTAC has been revamped for 2E, but when I played it had some balance issues. Picking up Sabine's ability was stupid good.

The problem is, HotAC has been revamped by different people in different ways. There hasn't been any 'official' 2E version that i know of, just a few different peoples different takes on it.

I'm waiting to work on my on variant until more ships release, but its getting close to the point where enough has been released to start working on it (not doing rebel/empire though as others have their own variants).

That said, it was fun in 1E, but even it fell victim to powercreep of the game as the author didn't really update it past a certain point.

There is also Flight Group Alpha. Lets players do the missions from the TIE Fighter computer game. You can find the latest version on Boardgamegeek in the Xwing games files.

@Wolfshead is our local HoTAC and Flight Group Alpha DM, and I thought he was running a pretty well revamped HoTAC. Hopefully, folks have been able to use some Covid time to put in some revision work on it.

The latest update filled in several missions. We had been getting close to catching up before the break, but now have plenty to go through when we start back up. I just need to either buy or borrow some ships. Even with my collection, I am short several. One of the missions calls for 17! TIE Advanced.
