a question about Shyla Varad's "proximity strike" class card.

The card says:
"Exhaust this card while attacking with a meel weapon. You may force the defender to reroll 1 defense dice of your choice. Then you may reroll 1 attack dice".

This card allows you to force the defender to reroll one of their defense dice, of Shyla's choosing.

For me, only if you do this , you may reroll one of your own attack dice.

In other words, Shyla can reroll her dice only if she first lets the defender reroll the defense dice.

Or can Shyla reroll her attack die simply by exhaust the card?

The doubt arises from the fact that in the card there are three different sentences, separated by a point ("Exhaust .... You may force .... Then you may reroll .....").

No, You can choose to do either.

FFG loves to use the word "may" confirming that an action is not obligatory, but the key thing with Shyla's card here is that the sentence is completed after discussing the re-roll of the opponent die.

Once that choice is confirmed, you progress to the next sentence, allowing you to re-roll a die from the attack pool.

If it were to be reliant on the defender re-roll it would say "You may force the defender to re-roll 1 defense die of your choice. If you do , you may re-roll 1 attack die."

This is mainly due to the fact that there are figures which do not have a defense dice pool.

In Imperial Assault "Then" is indicating a sequence, not a requirement. "If you do," would be a requirement.

Also it's important to note that FFG has clarified that the word "then" is used only to indicate sequence.

It does not indicate that "part 1" must be performed in order for "part 2" to be performed (as in if/then).
