Monster trophies/monster tokens

By Zhankfor, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi guys

This question has probably been asked before, but I haven't been able to find it here or in any of the rulebooks, even though it seems like it should be an easy one to answer.

I'm confused about the difference (or if there is a difference at all) between "monster trophies" and "toughness." For example, Michael McGlen passes his personal story if he has 5 monster trophies - does that mean he has to have a total of 5 toughness worth on all the monster tokens he has, or does that mean he actually has to have 5 monster tokens in total, regardless of their toughness?

Thanks a lot

It means he has to have 5 monster tokens in total. A monster trophy is a monster token, and regardless of the toughness listed for the monster, one monster token is one monster trophy. So you could have for example, 3 Monster Trophies, that are worth 7 Toughness.

Toughness is really mostly used for spending to use a location's ability, since most location abilities require monster toughness. But there are encounters that may have you draw or discard a trophy.

Its also worth noting (and I didnt realize this until recently from a post on the issue) that monsters that get a toughness boost (like cultists being at +1 toughness due to AO or Mythos Card) count as being higher in value.

I generally place a heart token on top of them to remind myself (in case the mythos card etc. goes out of play).

Just in case there's a misunderstanding, once the toughness-modifier effect leaves play, the monster trophy's toughness is no longer affected. If The Festival goes away, for example, your Cultist and Byakhee monster trophies go back down to 1 toughness. Likewise, those Cultists and Byakhees that you acquired before The Festival came out do get the toughness boost. Of course, they lose it once The Festival is out of play.
