vassal vs tts for armada

By Uncrustable, in Star Wars: Armada

I prefer TTS, it just came to me easier than Vassal. I've been using TTS Armada for so long, I am confident in being able to teach folks how to use it. I think it's easier for people to get into and better resembles the tabletop experience with the camera perspectives.

It also has the added benefit of being able to do Betrayal, Catan, Pandemic, or Exploding Kittens etc. which my non-armada gaming friends have been making good use of during COVID.

PS. I can't wait to get back to IRL, because playing your fleet on a table is so immensely satisfying.

For me its TTS, because the overall vassal interface just feels like some homebrew 1992 program (not being able to scroll and zoom quickly really kills it for me, e.g. with ASWD or the middle mousebutton/scroll wheel - or am I missing something?) ... and I only have one screen at home right now, so maybe it would be more comfortable with two available.

For TTS, I really recommend to lock everything and always roll dice with the "roll shortcut" (press the "r" key, I think), never use the physics roll.

I just whish there was some way to import lists more quickly...

I don't think you've played enough Vassal ;)

You can enable scrolling with arrow keys in Preferences. And Ctrl + Mouse Wheel zooms in and out. Fairly standard fare ever since 1992 :P

I'm just kidding - too good an opportunity to pass over.

Somthing else that helps me in vassal is you can detach all of the windows from each other and arrange them how you want (I think that's in preferences)

Something tells me I just need a bigger screen or better two screens for vassal... :)

My inner ear is overly sensitive.

I can’t really play TTS because I get motion sick rotating the table, etc.

VASSAL’s locked in top down view has the benefit of not causing me to yak into the toilet mid-game.

I acknowledge that I am in a tiny minority of players and would most definitely have been the first to be eaten by a sabre toothed tiger back in the day.

If you use the top down view on TTS you can pretend you are playing vassal. Until you need to draw a LOS and can’t see the yellow dot because the ship is in the way. Or until you need to move a token distance 1 with a VCX. Or until the man tool breaks in round 2 and you need your opponent to press the buttons (or log out to the main menu, find the game and join again). Or you need to work out if something is in range 2 of Jan Ors. Or you load pre-spawned ships and the rulers don’t work. Or until you need to zoom in a bit and suddenly you are under the table.

But yes - just like Vassal!

To move a token distance 1 just press "Attack" on the VCX. Press L on token, done.

But it’s not that simple at all. You have to move the vcx into range one - and the token doesn’t have a range band button. So you have to create a range one circle and then float it around the table. And if you are playing sensor net you need a range 2 and a range 4 circle.

Seems like using the Free Squadron Movement would be more useful and give you the range one band off the VCX .

Yeah, especially if you are rocking multiscreen and can really spread all your stuff out. VASSAL is and always has been a more pro-level wargaming tool. ASL, Third Reich, Panzer General, etc. It works for SWArmada well as Armada is really "fiddly". I like TTS for Warhammer style games, which are far more visual than substance oriented, and it is prettier, but for hardcore wargaming, VASSAL is a solid toolset.
