Den of the Wolf

By Rogue30, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

"Any Phase: If it is not the marshalling phase, kneel 3 influence and discard Den of the Wolf from play (cannot be saved) to repeat the current phase at the end of the phase. (Limit once per game.)"

So, this repeated phase has no "at the beginning of the phase" and I cannot come out of Shadows, right?

Why would you think that? You don't "repeat" the phase as part of the original. You do it all over again. The new phase has its own beginning and its own end, separate from the original phase in which you used it.

Because of "“At the end of the phase” passive effects initiate in step 4 of the “End of Phase” framework action window."

So, your reasoning is that the entire repeated phase happens in Step 4 of the "End of Phase" action window of the original phase? More to the point, it happens in Step 4.III - Resolve Passive, and that the repeated phase actually starts, ends, and everything else before the original phase is technically over?

That creates a whole bunch of needless complications. For one, remember that you are not allowed to trigger any Responses during the "End of Phase" window. So if the entire repeated phase takes place as part of the "End of Phase" window, you get no Responses to anything in that repeated phase. Additionally, if the repeated phase takes place as part of the "End of Phase" window, it is still part of the original phase and all "once per phase" limits still apply, including such things as "you can only initiate one of each challenge in the phase." Repeating the challenge phase would be useless. Keep in mind also that anything killed "at the of the phase" in the original phase is still moribund and on the table because you haven't gotten to the end of the action window yet.

Any time you try to jam a full action window inside another one, things get messy. It really cannot happen that way.

It is considerably cleaner to think of the effect that activates "at the end of the phase" as changing the definition for which phase begins at the next "begin phase" framework window, not as beginning - and completing - the entire repeated phase within the "end of phase" action window. I know that is something of an "it works because it works" answer, but it really is the much better way to address the issue.

Yeah, that was silly, nitpicking question, but it never hurt to ask and, as proved in past, I often learn something gui%C3%B1o.gif If card say simply "after this phase" just as with epic events, there would be no problem.
