Republic Flotilla

By JediPartisan, in Star Wars: Armada

I was looking more at the Consular Class Cruiser title “Radiant VII”, and I started to wonder, what could the Republic use as their flotilla ship. Honestly I couldn’t think of one. Then I started to wonder if the “Radiant VII” would have to be the ship that fulfills that role. The cheapest Consular Class cruiser comes in at 39 (with 2 point “Radiant VII” title and no other upgrades), but the most expensive flotilla is the Gozanti at 28 (with no title or upgrades). That’s quite a jump in price to fulfill that roll, and though the Consular Cruiser is a tougher ship, it doesn’t have the benefit of a Scatter.
The republic has many different types of shuttles and “transport” ships (mainly of the troop varieties), but they’re very small and generally don’t get past 20 meters. The Gozanti and GR-75 are 64 and 90 meters respectively, so there aren’t many ships that would fit that size/class for the Republic. I think the best or closest I could find was the GX1 Short Hauler , which was used by Ahsoka in one episode of the Clone Wars, but it only comes in at a low 38 meters.

As for the CIS, they could easily use the C-ROC variant of the Gozanti (74 meters), or the CIS Landing Craft (though a little on the long side at 210 meters), or even the Pengitux-Class Light transport (55 meters). So the CIS has many options, it’s just the Republic that seems to have a vacancy at that size/class.

Does anyone with better lore knowledge, know of some obscure ship that could fit the bill for the poor old Republic? I’m worried that the Radiant VII may be our only hope, and if so, it’s a pretty expensive alternative (point wise).

Wait, maybe I got it. The Star Shuttle comes in at 80 meters (about 2/3 the size of the Consular Class Cruiser). It is generally unarmed, but some were modified for military service and were given at least two Turbolasers (sounds like the GR-75 really). The only problem is that they were mainly used to only transport dignitaries, not cargo and can be seen in Phantom Menace (see first 18 seconds). Also I know the GR-75 may have been placed on a sliding scale in Armada to make its 90 meters look better next to other ships (especially as a flotilla), but would the 80 meter Star Shuttle be small enough next to the 115 meter Consular Class Cruiser, or would it require some fudging too, to make it look more “flotilla” like? And would people be ok with that?

With the introduction of Pass Tokens, I don't think flotillas will be as popular in Rebel and Imperial fleets as before, because while Fleet Support was useful, a lot of players just used them for cheap activations. Pass Tokens might not render flotillas obsolete, but the Fleet Support slot will probably be their main draw going forward.

That should mean there's less need of Republic and Separatist flotillas with the Fleet Support slot. The Fleet Support slot can be given to any ship, like the Consular Corvette with the Radiant VII ship title. Many players predict that the unrevealed Hardcell Transport will have a Fleet Support slot (the revealed Battle Refit doesn't); we shouldn't have to wait too much longer to find out.

Before the Radiant VII was revealed, many Armada players speculated that the Republic Pelta would have Fleet Support. Since Radiant VII is a unique ship title, I think it's still likely that the Republic Pelta will have Fleet Support. I think FFG just needed to give the Republic (and probably the Separatists) 1 ship with Fleet Support at the launch of Clone Wars Armada, and that should tide us over until the Republic Pelta is released -- supposedly in January.

That doesn't necessarily mean there won't be flotillas for the Republic and Separatist factions, but it relieves the urgency for them.

I'd like to see Fleet Support become available on larger ships than flotillas and small ships. I understand why Fleet Support was limited to flotillas originally, but that restriction doesn't seem necessary anymore. Fleet Support seems like something that ships like the MC80 Command Cruiser, Interdictor, Nebulon-B Support Refit, or a version of an ISD could do. If the Ship Cards are ever updated and released in standard card size in the future, AMG could take the opportunity to make changes like that -- and/or add new ship titles that add Fleet Support to certain non-flotilla ships.

Good points. I just kinda liked the idea behind the flotilla (a group of small ships clustered together). Whether they have fleet support as their contribution to the fleet, or used as a cheap activation, or something else (maybe with some kind of purpose strictly for them, even if it’s just something like anti-squadron support), I hope they keep them in the game. Maybe they revamped the flotillas with the new cards too (probably not, but I can dream 😊 ).
