Form Complement for Makashi

By FelixFenix, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Looking for which Lightsaber Form can complement a Padawan/Makashi Duelist. Thinking of Juyo for Criticals and Multiple opponents, Shien for Counterstrike, Side Step, Distuptive Strike and Reflect Goodness and Ataru for Saber Swarm, Hawkbat Swoop and some Reflect ranks.

What’s your take?

It really depends what sort of stuff you like to get up to in a fight.

Thanks

I can see himself as wanting to improve his dueling skills and diversify his style with a couple of moves to not become a one trick tauntaun. That’s why now I’m more inclined for Ataru or Shien.

Before Elias says it 😉 , Niman Disciple is a good form to complement any other form. Because it gives +1 FR and Dedication talents.

But for a duellist character I'd choose Shien expert. Because it gives Parry and Reflect so can build a good defence. And it gives capacity to counterstrike. Something very important if you specialise in duelling.

I second Niman Disciple. The +defensive talents will greatly improve lightsaber vs lightsaber combat survival.

Thanks guys but I don’t see the character going for Niman.

I reckon that the Form VI has a lot of positive sides, as I have one Niman user character myself, but this Makashi character does not have the inclination to go through that route, still a good suggestion.

What about Bounty Hunter:Martial Artist? The talents are all Lightsaber friendly. Lots of instances of Parry in it, which will help for dueling.

I’ll prefer to stay in the Force Careers, I don’t see him going BH, but thank you though.

So far I am thinking Shien will be a good fit. Gives me Parry, Reflect, Supreme Reflect, Falling Avalanche, Counterstrike, Side Step, Distuptive Strike and Djem So Deflection.

Try knight from the jedi career in rise of the separatists (clone wars book).

Check out trees like arbiter or sentry or armorer. might be good depending on what you want

I initially presumed this was a mechanical question, in which case you're unlikely to do better than Niman, if it's a narrative question then my knee-jerk response is just to say 'Base it on the RP at your table and speak with your GM'.

But you asked it here which makes me assume you've already tried the above.

I need some more narrative information before I can make any real recommendation.

Knight is comparable to niman and provides improved reflect... which may make it more desirable than niman. If I want narrative soresu capabilities I look at knight rather than soresu defender

I have to agree with Elias, I look at the Knight last night and I think it is a good fit.

My character is a Pantoran noble who was trained by a surviving knight from Luke’s academy. He’s was taught in the classical padawan style and he chose makashi as it remained of the fencing style that his family practiced. He has a personality similar to Flyn Rider/Poe Dameron, always upbeat.

He’s the face of the party, which is composed of a Padawan/Armorer/soon to take Soresu and a Padawan/Healer/ soon to start Niman or maybe Knight (he saw the Knight last night too and he he’s having now second thoughts).

Generally speaking the two best ways to augment existing lightsaber capabilities are knight and niman so @Luahk and others aren't wrong to say niman-disciple, niman-disciple + knight are also an extremely potent combo... possibly the best lightsaber combo in the game... if you can start in the jedi career and get peerless interception, I think that's the single best signature ability in the game for a character with a lightsaber.

Don’t get me wrong I know Niman is really effective, as I already have one character with that career, but I want to improve his duelist skill and while doing something different.

@EliasWindrider My character is a Padawan/Makashi, in a couple sessions I will be able to complete my Makashi tree. And I was looking for options of what to do after. This is a character of a special campaign, we started at knight level and played frequently and the GM was a little generous with the XP at the beginning. This at least for me doesn’t happens.

What I will do is amass the XP later to buy Peerless Interception and move to Knight.

PS Thanks to all of you. I really am happy that you came to my aid with your recommendations. Thanks.

Firstly, what exactly are you looking to accomplish with this character? Makashi/Padawan combo already means your character is very skilled in one-on-one duels but not to a crippling extent thanks to the Padawan spec covering up some of Makashi Duelist's weaker points.

If you're still wanting to focus on melee prowess, then Shii-Cho Knight not only gives you more melee options (including dealing with multiple foes at once) and even more durability. You don't get a Force Rating boost, but it doesn't seem like your character relies all that much on their Force dice. Plus, Shii-Cho (like Juyo) doesn't have a Form Technique talent, so you can still use your Presence for your Lightsaber checks while making use of Shii-Cho's 'saber-based talents.

That’s exactly what I was looking for Donovan, to focus a little bit more on martial prowess. We already have Force Focused character, so I want to be the martial one.

Shii-Cho offers good points that I did not considered as is mostly overlooked in our group, and will help me improve my combat skills against multiple opponents, more staying power with durable, natural blade master can turn the tables, good stuff, good stuff

Thank you very much Donovan
