Described in Disciples Of Harmony and Gadgets And Gear, this ranged ( light ) weapon is enc 2 and described as a "rifle", whatever that means for a freeze ray. Does anyone know what it looks like? Does it fit in a pistol holster? Is it SMG-sized? Carbine-sized?

I don't know if it's the same thing, I haven't seen the fluff for it from the books. That's just the closest thing I could find on Wookieepedia.
If it isn't the same thing, I'd say it's reasonable to guess that they've miniaturized the technology in the last few thousand years and packed it into a pistol.
Sounds more like a copy/paste error or typo to me.
I think Mr. Freeze was moving away from the rifle to a more compact version, so...
