All FFG Star Wars (edit: Miniature) Games are moving to new studio

As someone who works in corporate America (you may too; I don't mean to discount your own experiences), I will say that corporations change direction all the time, often for nebulous and not obviously beneficial reasons. I've been with my current employer three years and the amount of change I've witnessed is staggering (and this is in a company that's doing well).

My company is also made up of multiple smaller companies, like Asmodee, and in my experience, this may have been as much of a surprise for Atomic Mass as it was for FFG. It would not surprise me in the least if there was no "pitch" meeting. That the decision was made from the top, consulting only a bare minimum of employees.

Again, just based on my own personal, tangentially related experiences.

That's all fair and especially a good point on it possibly being a surprise to Atomic Mass and doesn't particularly discount my point of making a change because they are not happy with the status quo.

Seems like we need @Crabbok to interview someone at CMG, if we are going to get some answers to our current questions.

Beyond that, I am still very hopeful about the change of venue. While exceedingly brief, Will's answers seem to reflect an enthusiasm and sense of urgency that has been missing from FFG in recent years. Maybe it's just me reading what I want to see into the article, but after the trainwreck that was 2020, I could really use some good news.

However, I am a bit wary of license/development transfers in general

It's the same umbrella company???

My biggest question is, what will happen to the Forums. We have an amazing community and history recorded here. I would really hate to lose all that.

The real question

I am also curious whether I should still expect my pre-orders for the four upcoming X-wing expansions alleged for the next few weeks and for the Clone Wars Starters, Squadrons, and the Card Pack to be fullfilled. It seems reasonable that they will be however this sort of news tends to disrupt all sorts of things and to bring unforeseen fallout.

A vendor on Amazon had the Card Pack listed as being available on December 4.

I am trying to decide whether to buy a StarHawk. It makes me nervous whether there will be additional restocks. At least, I finally got some ILCs and Raiders.

That latest little q&a basically was all non answers and fluff. I am very nervous about the the future of armada. I play legion as well and am not as nervous about it. I really hope they don’t start doing unpainted armada ships and making us paint and assemble a ship that is in 50 different pieces.

Not that surprising; there's a chance the people at AMG only just found out this was happening as well, so wanted to put out something quickly without knowing much.

FFG's official US release date is 4 December, it was updated a bit ago. International may be a bit later (the UK retailers have it for 11 December).

Given Armada is staying within Asmodee, I doubt this changeover will affect anything until after Q1 2021 wave of Clone Wars stuff (which FFG's Armada team should already be finished with). It might slow down the new Rules Reference and online stuff if AMG want a say in that, but that would seem like a very ... courageous thing for them to do.

Agreed.

The real question

Indeed. Atomic Mass must have one of the worst "official" websites in the industry. Hobbyists were churning out better websites in the 90s. If they intend to keep the rather large FFG Star Wars community happy (with news, product announcements, community portals, etc.), their website is going to need a complete overhaul. But I'd rather they spend their time, money, and effort on producing Armada, X-Wing and Legion than web development. So...

Does anyone have any idea what it is Atomic Mass may have convinced the higher ups of in order to have these games shifted to their studio?

I think it's more likely that Atomic Mass Games was created for the purpose of concentrating Asmodee's miniatures development in a single studio, and after it proved itself with Marvel then Asmodee went forward with the plan. How much of that was known by FFG or AMG, I don't know.

I also cry for the pandemic.

I see pros and cons with the decision.

PRO

  • Having a dedicated miniature game company working on miniature games makes a lot of sense.
  • Marvel: Crisis Protocol seems to be doing very well, both in sales and player approval of the game itself.
  • A transfer of responsibility is better than a cancellation (and lets face it, that's been rumoured for a long time for Armada)

CON

  • The timing is bad. Very bad. Just before Christmas and a soft relaunch of Armada? That's not good.
  • The uncertainty is going to drive me (and no doubt lots of other people!) up the wall.

We've seen the RPGs get cut and transferred to Edge Studios which I'm sure will be a good thing in the long run for those lines, but the transition itself meant no news was available for months after the handover. Its only in the last few weeks that murmurings have started coming out. Is this what we are to expect from the miniature game lines? Armada is essentially getting a version 1.5 with two entirely new factions being launched and then.... *tumbleweeds*

Luckily I've been collecting Armada for a long time so gaps between releases are nothing new, and the transfer rather than a notice of cancellation is a positive, so I am cautiously optimistic about the long-term future, but my Republic and CIS starter ships (when they turn up!) won't see much play while I wait to find out more information, and that's a little upsetting.

I'll say that going from starting up Marvel:CP and then being given Star Wars Legion, X-wing, AND Armada feels like "Okay, you've done well in the deep end of the pool, now it's time we tossed in sharks."

Don't know if they were being groomed for it, but it does feel like a shift to be suddenly given a huge IP with a dedicated community of people who have already put years into the game.

I am still cautiously optimistic about all of this, and do believe that this could give the games a new lease on life, but boy, do I hope that these developers were already familiar with these games going in, because if not... yikes. "Oh, you've never played or even watched football before? You're the new coach."

This feels like the Tom Herman position at Texas. If I were a Texas fan, I definitely would want it filled, but if I'm a coach I really don't want that responsibility.

I want Armada, Legion, and X-wing to continue, but I wouldn't fault anyone for looking at it and saying "Yeah, we don't want to take the risk of getting blackballed in the Star Wars world" cause it's a HUGE IP. I really hope that AMG is up to the task, and feel like we are going to be pleasantly surprised. I'm going to try hard to keep from judging them harshly, cause it's gonna be a transition for sure.

I'm gonna do my best to buy used from now on, Asmodee really bent their employees over the barrel

Has anyone asked what is happening to the forums?

Ask who? Atomic?

Just has it even been talked about.

We are all on asmodee accounts now, so does this mean a migration, or a fresh start?

I've asked Atomic. Maybe they'll answer. Not sure they have all the details figured out yet.

My internet butt pats! Nooooooo
