Rhaegar Targaryen question

By zarius, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Really i have 2 questions:

  • The FAQs states that if Rhaegar dies in a challenge, the challenge ends without resolution, but what happens if he dies when the claim value of a militar challenge is resolved, i mean, during resolution... Can I earn unopposed power? Does renown characters receive power?
  • I'll like to know how the resolution of a challenge works in steps to understand the question above (i read that renown is earned before Lethal...)

Thank you in advance.

Well, the resolution of the challenge works like this:

1. Determine winner of the challenge

2. Challenge result is implemented (claim)

3. Reward for unopposed challenge is awarded

4. Renown is awarded

-> Passive abilities

-> Responses

So you'll have to resolve the challenge completely, including keywords, before reaching the point where Rhaegar's Response can be activated. This means you'll have to fulfill the claim, reward unopposed and Renown, apply other Keywords (Deadly, etc) and passive abilities and then use Rhaegar, which has been Moribund since claim has been applied.

The line in the FAQ about a challenge ending without resolution seems unnecessary and a bit confusing to me. Rhaegar's ability just resolves like any other response, as outlined by Eloooooooi above. The only difference is that once it resolves you end all phases and the round.

Well, that line makes sense if Rhaegar is killed during the challenge due to Lethal Counterattack, Ice or whatever.

Yeah, but it's still unnecessary if you ask me. What would it mean for the challenge to resolve? There's no chance for things that key off the challenge resolving to trigger because the round ends right there.

There were a lot of people asking whether they won the challenge or not (Claim, Renown, etc.) when Rhaegar was killed before formal challenge resolution. Remember that just because it seems unnecessary to you (or me), not everyone reads things the same way.

Yeah, I agree. I was making that point mainly because it seemed like line was part of the reason for this question, so in this case it seemed like the line was confusing rather than clarifying. I thought stressing the fact that line is not necessary to determine the resolution of Rhaegar's ability might be helpful (but then it might not be : ) ).

Yeah, it would be easier of the people who needed that level of clarification wore name tags or something. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Another question about Rhaegar. If Rhaegar is in play and both players show as plots "Valar Morghulis" at the same time, can any of the players activate the answer of Rhaegar after the first Valar or must wait to resolve both "When revealed" before the answer could be activated?

As you can see in FAQ, revealing plots goes like this:

1. Choose and reveal plots
2. Initiative is counted
3. High initiative player appoints “First Player”
4. "When revealed" plot effects resolve (In order determined by First Player)

5 passives

Rule of thumb - responses are always last (unless they are "cancel" or "save" response).

It is what i think it must be done, but all the other players in my group tell that answers can be used anytime in that sequence.

Thanks for the answer.
