Friday Night Cube Draft....

This is our first attempt at a cube draft of all CCG cards here locally. We have an attendance of 16 players, with 3 other people who showed up after starting time or decided not to play. So we have two perfect cubes of 8 players. We are now halfway into our first round. It seems to be much more popular than a normal booster draft.

Josh Staton won the cube draft going 4-0, and Kevin McClure got second going 3-1.

Note that if you post results at the end of each round, I can update the wiki a lot more easily.

Saturday morning Joust Championships are about to begin. We have 18 participants with the following breakdown:

3 Martell (All 3 no agenda)

5 Stark (4 Siege of Winterfell, 1 no Agenda)

2 Baratheon (1 Summer, 1 No Agenda)

4 Lannister (2 Shadows, 2 No agenda)

1 Targ (Summer)

3 Greyjoy (1 Winter, 2 running Stewards and Rangers)

We have players from 3 states (Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa).

wow, the results should be really interesting given that breakdown. can't you tell one of the stark and one of the lanni players each to switch to targ so that we can get even better data? :-)

Ok, my game ended on round 3 (I'm playing one of the Stark Siege of Winterfell decks), so I have some time to post the first round pairings

Kevin M (Greyjoy Stewards and Rangers) defeated Josh S (Bara Summer)

Justin Fox (Stark Siege) defeated Mike (Martell)

Greg A. (Stark Siege) defeated Zach (Stark)

Kevin S. (Targ Summer) defeated Brett (Stark Siege)

Andrew (Greyjoy Winter) Defeated Ben (Baratheon)

Lukas (Lanny Shadows) defeated Katie (Stark Siege)

Paul (Lanny) defeated Darryl (Martell)

Eric (Greyjoy stewards and rangers) defeated Rayne (Lannister)

Will (Martell) defeated Kyle (Lannister Shadows)

Definitely want to learn more about this Targ deck. My brother built one recently that came real close to beating me turn three, except he's rusty with shadows and didn't realize he could only bring out one card each phase. Had he not made that play mistake, he likely had the game. I think there is a scary Targ build out there that we haven't seen yet.

Round 2

Justin defeated Greg

Darryl defeated Zach

Will defeated Paul

Josh defeated Brett

Kyle Defeated Mike

Kevin S defeated Ben

Katie defeated Rayne

Andrew defeated Eric

Kevin M defeated Lukas

Round 3

Greg defeated Ben

Josh defeated Paul

Brett defeated Rayne

Will defeated Andrew

Kevin M defeated Justin

Eric defeated Kevin S.

Katie defeated Kyle

Zach defeated Mike

Lukas defeated Darryl

Some short stats after Round 3 (deduced from Dobbler's posts):

- Wow, no undefeated Lannister decks after round 2... and after round three there's only one that's 2-1 and that's a Lanni-Shadows deck to boot (two at 1-2 and one at 0-3). Very promising! =)

On comparison, Siege of Winterfell decks are so far 3x 2-1 and 1x 1-2. Doing significantly better.

The Summer Bara is at 2-1, and the normal Baratheon at 0-3.

Martell's are at 3-0, 1-2, 0-3.

The Targ Summer is at 2-1...

GJ Winter is doing ok at 2-1, but the two GJ-NW decks are at 3-0 and 2-1! I really want to find out what those decks have eaten...

A quick analysis would say that the Siege of Winterfell decks are doing pretty strongly, but also that the field seems to be promisingly even between all houses. =)

Round 4

Josh defeated Andrew

Greg defeated Eric

Justin defeated Katie

Brett defeated Darryl

Ben defeated Zach

Kyle defeated Paul

Kevin M. defeated Will

Kyle defeated Paul

Lukas defeated Kevin S.

Mike received a bye after Rayne dropped

Round 5

Josh defeated Justin

Greg defeated Kevin M. (a quick note on this game - we both played Epic Battles preplot, then both revealed Fury's. I ended up winning 4 Mil challenges against Kevin in this round, two on offense, two on defense, and killed 6 of his 7 characters one of the most brutal Fury's I've ever seen)

Zach defeated Huseman

Ben defeated Darryl

Kyle defeated Kevin S.

Will defeated Lucas

Andrew defeated Katie

Mike defeated Paul

Top four ended up like this

1. Kevin M (Greyjoy Stewards and Rangers) 4-1

2. Will (Martell) 4-1

3. Josh (Bara Summer) 4-1

4. Greg (Stark Siege of Winterfell) 4-1

So four different house are represented in the final four, Greyjoy, Martell, Bara, and Stark. Four different agendas are represented in the final four. And Lannister is absent.

Once we finish dinner, Kevin and myself will face off, while Will and Josh will play.

Kevin defeated me in our match. Some interesting notes in this game - 4 Epic Battle Events were played before the first plot was revealed in this game (two by each of us). First turn Fear of Winter was revealed by Kevin, and with his one card he marshalled Syrio into shadows. As you can guess, Syrio kicked the crap out of me during the Epic phases and cleared my board. I was forced into an early Valar and could never catch up.

Josh just beat Will in their game.

So the final game will be Kevin versus Josh

Will (kennon) and I played for 3rd/4th. In my decks quickest showing of the day, I got 12 power in the first turn and won the game in the second turn. If will had not had a Lost Oasis to Kneel my Blackfish, I would have won in the first turn.

Josh Staton defeats Kevin for the Missouri regional Joust Championships! Baratheon rush all the way for Mr. Staton!

Tomorrow we play Melee and determine the overall champion.

Congratulations Josh. Way to stick with your guns and play Bara Rush. ~Bara has won 2 Regionals in a row, time to start looking at erratas to ban broken Bara Rush?

Congratulations on the win for Staton! Sounds like a really interesting Tournament. =)

...does this mean that we all have to stop whining about Lannister all the time? But it's so much fun...

Congrats to Staton on the win! It's cool to see such a diverse set of houses being played. I'm also intrigued by what seems to be a copious use of epic event cards during this tourney. I'll admit that was a suprise to me.

Sounds like everyone had a great time. Looking forward to hearing the melee reports today.

Way to go Josh!

One quick question: when was the decision decided to allow Lords of Winter, and how did it affect builds?

Also, amazed to see so much Epic Battles played. What a way to use Syrio!

Epic events makes perfect sense in a Siege of Winterfell deck... I mean extra military challenges by which I get to claim two additional power every time I win + additional kills? Yes Please!

Epics combined with Syrio out of Greyjoy is a little more surprising. I haven't really explored that one yet. I knew the synergy was there but never really made the connection of how powerful that could be in Greyjoy.

Table 1

Greg 10 points

(the final play in this game involved Ben playing the Winter is Coming event while I challenged Paul in a power challenge. It raised my claim and allowed me to win the game. Probably one of the most climatic king-making sequences I've ever seen. Had his surprise play not allowed me to win, josh would have won during his challenges.)
