so with the new tie heavy and heralds of hope being out how long does the army builder take to update? just getting back into xwing and one of are guys is excited to play the new tie and i wanna try some of the new ships for resistance. is this a common thing for it to be updated well past release dates of ships?

Just a heads up, the current app technically isn't supported anymore. For over a year now a new app has been in the works, however we have no real information other than that its still "coming". The current official app is -rarely- touched anymore, and its a surprise if/when it ever gets anything added to it. It got Wave 7 for example, but never any Epic things, and so far hasn't gotten 7.1 content. You're best off using any of the various 3rd party squad builders as they usually update within an hour or two.

How hard is it though to update? Normally they've been on the ball. And the new app has been supposedly coming for what? A year and a half or so?

They've updated. A lot.

This looks to be a new way they will work from now on. It may be tha tthe old builder was difficult to update, and they might have built quick-updates into the new version. We'll have to see.
