Coordination Dodge timing

By StriderZessei, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

What is the specific timing of activating Coordination Dodge? The talent says, "When targeted...", so does that mean before dice are rolled, similar to the normal Dodge talent (which uses the same wording)?

Secondly, when does the pc move when activating the Improved Dodge talent? I'm assuming after the attack resolves, so they can't move out of engaged range before a melee attack can trigger.

Check the long version of the text. If it says something like "after rolling, but before determining the results..." then you have your answer. If it doesn't, then it would operate identically to Dodge as to when it triggers. Look for the word "immediately," as it would likely indicate the latter option.

My guess is that it operates identically to Dodge.

I am not sure. You'll have to check the full description. If it says something like "after the check is resolved..." then you have your answer. If it doesn't, it is likely an immediate thing. (Again, look for the word "immediately.")

I'm pretty sure that it would be after the check is resolved, but I can see a situation where allowing a character to move out of range was the intention.

I don't have the full text of either talent in front of me, but that's what I know and can guess from experience.

Yeah, the full wording IS, "When targeted..." same as normal Dodge. It just seems a little clunky for a talent you have to spend a Destiny point to activate, when you might not even need to; AND you can't, for example, activate Dodge, then wait and see if you need to activate Coordination Dodge. It's either double down, or risk damage getting through.

Yes, it's added to the check before it's rolled.

As someone with a character that has this talent, yes, sometimes it sucks when the NPC would have failed if you chose not to use it.

But them's the breaks.

When it does affect the outcome, it's awesome.

But considering that another use of a DP is to simply Upgrade the attacker's Difficulty once, adding up to 5 Failures (depending upon ranks in Coordination), it's really nice.

So basically regular Dodge when you want to decrease the likelihood of damage (or want to trigger Improved Parry, etc.), and Coordination when you absolutely cannot afford to be hit (like Vader swinging at you)?

Pretty much.
