simple monster toughness question

By Winter324, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I'll spare you all the background, here's the question:

When facing a monster with four toughness for example, if you get two successes in one round of combat and it goes to another round do those two successes carry over or do you need to get all four in one roll?

yes, it's a n00by thing to ask, but it came up.

Not in regular combat. You need to score X successes in a single combat round to kill a regular monster. All or nothing. Otherwise you take damage or suffer consequences as listed and proceed to the next round.

In the Final Battle successes DO carry over to wear down the GOO.

It is all or nothing when it comes to killing a monster. So the toughness resets for each attack.

Someone beat me to it, but if you want to look it up for yourself, page 15 of the main rulebook:

Important: If a monster’s toughness is greater than 1,
partial success has no effect on it. A monster must be
completely defeated in one Combat check or it ignores
all successes the investigator rolled.

Thanks Turtle and Steve-O. Well, I don't think I or my wife has already screwed the pooch on that particular rule. Thanks for the clarification.

Four toughness eh? Sounds like either Shub was in play or you faced the God of the Bloody Tongue. In either case: ugh.

But yeah, it's best to remember that when you fight a monster, you're performing a combat check with a difficulty equal to the monster's toughness. As with all checks with 2+ difficulty, you need to score the minimum successes in one roll.

I imagine this doesn't occur to everybody, but while Mandy Thompson is great at bailing anyone out of any failed check, where her Research field comes in handy particularly is against tough monsters.
