Painting BX droids with contrast paints

By KommanderKeldoth, in Painting

Hey there community!

Im getting ready to paint up my BX commando droids and I'm going to use contrast paints (to match the rest of my seppies).

Does anyone have suggestions or experience achieving the dark blue-grey color of the BX droids with contrast paints?

I must admit that I am in the same boat as you, as I am still contemplating how to achieve that special color using contrast paints. S o this is all theory from my part...

I would personally try a mix of 3:1 basilicanum grey and leadbelcher as a base coat over a black primer with greyseer as heavy zenithal highlight. Then I would wash the armour with 4:1 nuln oil and gyphonne sepia to bring out the inherrent purplish tones of the basilicanum grey.

I'm mostly sticking with a colour scheme based on the CIS theme (ie, blue and light gray) though with the BX droids I switched the light grey with black to denominate their Commando role, so I primed them with Grey Seer and painted Black Templar over it, does a decent job of giving edge-highlights and not making them too dark. You could probably use a blue shade or gloss over that for a blue hue

I would be careful mixing a contrast with a metallic, it might work (I honestly dont know), but I have a feeling it may end up splitting the metallic pigment in the leadbelcher

yeah if you want to do a metallic with contrast I'd recommend undercoating it with the metallic first, then painting contrast over it to get the metallic sheen to it. Works wonders with bright metallic paints especially, but I imagine leadbelcher would work for a darker coat.
