I still fancy Esk, as long as the price is right. Ion is strong tool, nice to have as an option you can opt out of, as the situation demands. The bot, Marksmanship, 7FG... enough to sneak Ion through a heavy green defence, when 1 damage wouldn't achieve a lot. And it comes in I5 flavours.

1 Ion token for 1 hit damage seems a decent trade. 1 Ion token for 1 crit damage seems less good. If an ace has shields, I could understand some allure, but you must also choose whether you are going for Ion tokens before you even shoot. If it was after the neutralize results step, I could see more value in it.

Its more that it is so situational that I like it. Shooting a shielded force user that's just gonna nope and gtfo? Ion jab. Anything else, oh well, guess I'll just load up those crits....
I absolutely get that it's not something you'd want to pay much for, it might seem a waste to spam it. But presuming you're light on points in a 4 ship list, it doesn't seem a bad inclusion at all.
All depends.......

Well, I still hold that the tugboat should never have been in the game in the first place, and even if it should, it was misdesigned anyway. Lol 🤣
But other than that for the purposes of X-wing, I'm not actually concerned with some of the glaring disparities of values compared between some things. Like, I've tried coming up with a reason to even try having 1d secondary weapons. Which realistically with what all limiters and qualifiers and special rules and so on folks have been saying to tack on just to make them work, your no longer talking about a primary weapon anyway. But I can't come up with any.
If I were to be that concerned with the difference of thematically appropriate values to assign between say an A and a Quad, well then I'd be remiss to not recognize that the agility of some things also need addressed, and now I need a new number for super agile things. Like a FO interceptor would need a 4agi to show that it's just that good, and then the combat engine collapses like I talked about above.
In the grand scheme of how they design the combat values, I'm good with the fudge room they already have. So much of the game has such messed up assigned numbers anyway, you'd have to basically do 3rd edition just to get them all to that thematically appropriate level. Much rather keep the system that works then sacrifice it for an artistic expression.
I was referring less to jam like effects and more just minor damaging effects. Like I mentioned bombs and mines. Other things like console fire, asteroids, old first Ed revenge Droid (RIP TFG), could all fall under a 1d attack category.
