Balancing lists against each other

By Celereon, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi,

I've built three casual lists out of the ships I have to play at the kitchen table. I went and tried them in FlyCasual (versus AI), and found that they were reasonably balanced against each other, with one exception. Playing Resistance against Rebellion, I lose hard, every time. It feels like I can't manoeuvre around the Falcon, and I can't break through Luke's force defences or the Falcon's health without use of something like Vader/Fel's rerolls. Am I just bad (totally okay with this) or is there something fundamental about how the lists stack up against each other?

Empire (192):

  • TIE Advanced x1 -- Darth Vader -- 84
    • Darth Vader (67)
    • Heightened Perception (3)
    • Fire-Control System (2)
    • Homing Missiles (5)
    • Hull Upgrade (7)
  • TIE Interceptor -- Soontir Fel -- 64
    • Soontir Fel (54)
    • Predator (2)
    • Shield Upgrade (8)
  • TIE/ln Fighter -- Academy Pilot -- 22
  • TIE/ln Fighter -- Academy Pilot -- 22

Rebel Alliance (195):

  • Modified YT-1300 Light Freighter -- Han Solo -- 79
  • T-65 X-Wing -- Luke Skywalker -- 76
    • Luke Skywalker (62)
    • Instinctive Aim (1)
    • Proton Torpedoes (13)
  • T-65 X-Wing -- Blue Squadron Escort -- 40

Resistance (196):

  • T-70 X-Wing -- Poe Dameron -- 83
    • Poe Dameron (67)
    • BB-8 (8)
    • Afterburners (6)
    • Black One (2)
  • T-70 X-Wing -- Ello Asty -- 61
    • Ello Asty (55)
    • Shield Upgrade (6)
  • RZ-2 A-Wing -- Tallissan Lintra -- 52
    • Tallissan Lintra (36)
    • Heroic (1)
    • Proton Rockets (6)
    • Primed Thrusters (9)

Not entirely opposed to buying a fourth ship, but would prefer to avoid if possible (especially since I just bought the 3-pack of the Resistance dial upgrades).

Thanks!

WIth these platforms, i would probably just try to aproach poe's playstyle to that of Soontir, by replacing bb8 with an R4 unit so that you have access to a blue turn. Tali should also look to fly over the enemy ships and take advantage of her backwards shooting. The main advantage that these resistance pilots in particular have over the rebel pilots is their positioning ability. Heroic could also be pretty deece on Poe.

Other than that, maybe try to blow up the blue squardon escort before it gets tho shoot? Shouldn't be too much of a hurdle with that firepower

With three ships I'd recommend leaning in to Poe's ability to hit hard with double modded shots and give him torpedoes. Lulo can fly past and still hit with 3-4 dice, and Nien Numb doesn't mind moving first with his ability to shed stress. And add Heroic to everybody for funsies.

Poe Dameron (67)
Heroic (1)
R4 Astromech (2)
Shield Upgrade (6)
Integrated S-Foils (0)
Black One (2)
Proton Torpedoes (13)

Ship total: 91 Half Points: 46 Threshold: 4

L'ulo L'ampar (43)
Heroic (1)

Ship total: 44 Half Points: 22 Threshold: 2

Nien Nunb (55)
Heroic (1)
Pattern Analyzer (5)
Integrated S-Foils (0)

Ship total: 61 Half Points: 31 Threshold: 4

Total: 196

Hey, thanks for the help! Those changes to the list and to playstyle/strategy really helped. I think I was hesitant to add Proton Torpedoes to Poe since I only have one copy of the card (and it's being used by Luke) -- but I'll figure something out.

Also BB-8 for purely canon reasons, but he was basically never utilised.

Fly Casual sucks.

It’s a free, community-built tool to help tinker with lists. Will prepare you for a high level event? Not really. Is it still a valid and useful tool for players? Absolutely. So maybe try the whole “if you don’t have anything nice to say” thing because people dedicate a lot of time to create and maintain this app for the community.
