First List Help

By TheInsaniac, in Army Building

I'm looking at getting into the game as CIS or Empire. I've got a droid list that I think I like but I'd like some feedback on it from people with experience and I've really got no idea where to start with Empire.

Count Dooku (205 + 30 = 235)
--Force Reflexes (10), Battle Meditation (5), Force Choke (5), Aggressive Tactics (10)

B1 Battle Droids (36 + 18 = 54)
--E-5C B1 Trooper (18)

B1 Battle Droids (36 + 18 = 54)
--E-5C B1 Trooper (18)

B1 Battle Droids (36 + 18 = 54)
--E-5C B1 Trooper (18)

B1 Battle Droids (36 + 18 = 54)
--E-5C B1 Trooper (18)

BX-Series Droid Commandos (Strike Team) (20 + 32 = 52)
--BX-Series Droid Sniper (30), Situational Awareness (2)

Droidekas (100 + 10 = 110)
--HQ Uplink (10)

AAT Trade Federation Battle Tank (170 + 17 = 187)
--Lok Durd (9), High-Energy Shells (8)

Commands:
Fear, Surprise, Intimidation (1), Ambush (1), Push (2), Double the Fall (2), Assault (3), You Disappoint Me (3), Standing Orders (4)

Deployments: Major Offensive, The Long March, Advanced Positions, Roll Out
Objectives: Intercept the Transmissions, Recover the Supplies, Payload, Key Positions
Conditions: Hostile Environment, Clear Conditions, Fortified Positions, Rapid Reinforcements

With the Empire stuff, I don't really like Palpatine or Vader as commanders. Fan of the tank, shoretroopers and their mortar, and the E-Web (I know it's not great, I just like the look and feel). I'm not really sure where to go from that, though.

This thread has stayed empty for awhile, so despite having little experience with CIS I'll give it a go:

The #1 issue you're going to have immediately is activations. CIS love high activations as their cheap as dirt corps would imply. Overall, it seems to me like Dooku, your AAT, and the Droidekas are going to be pulling most if not all of the weight of your team. You'll need to play Dooku and your tank at peak efficiency to make them work in these conditions.

Personally, I'd not take two high point units that combined make up more than half your point value. Additional corps would be solid and some B2s if you have them.

But hey forget all that for a moment, you're new and probably just wanna have fun. Don't worry about winning or making optimal lists just yet. Pull out what you want to play (like this list) and just go for it with a friend. Tabletop Simulator is a good choice to play with if you haven't bought all these units yet. That's doubly so for the AAT as its not a cheap model.

Kind of hard not to take half the list's points with the tank and commander. Sure, I could take GG, but he's less useful than CD as a general and also needs points dumped into him if he's going to be effective in combat.

I played a game with the list yesterday and activations didn't seem to be an issue. I could reliably get CD, destroyers, and tank as the only chips in the stack with even one activation commands. Aggressive tactics seems to make the B1s pull their weight a lot better even if, yeah, CD and the vehicles are still doing most of the work.

I'm a little iffy on B2s because they don't have coordinate. I think I'd want a very different list to make them work well.

on the B1's consider taking 1 of them with hq uplink, that unit can recover and do another action per turn but it garantees that you can give out an order to your B1's/ BX every turn if you get the spacing done right. the rocket launcher works well with this squad.

maybe drop the Droidekas for 2 more B1 squads, the extra activation is very useful. or 1 B1 squad and another sniper team

keep in mind that the AAT is a very good vehicle naked (barrage is very good)

I was thinking that the Droidekas might be worth dropping. Either for more B1s or a unit of B2s and some upgrades to scatter around. Maybe swap Lok Durd for the OOM-series pilot.
