Fun Poll: Capital Ships- Quantity or Quality

By SithLrd88, in Star Wars: Armada

With all the talks about possible upcoming nerfs/buffs to upgrade cards, and with no articles to pass the time with, I'm curious about others' favorite play style.

Do you prefer running a few ships fully kitted-out or more ships with either minimal upgrades or naked?

I saw one comment from a player how upgrades can often define that ships role, which I understand. The nerd in me, however, likes to see more ships blowing each other up, at the expense of not using upgrades/squadrons or just not playing with a legit points cap.

(I'm not necessarily thinking of MSU lists when I say "more ships")

What about you?

I like to build a fleet with a variety of capital ships, and love upgrades. I've been trying to cut back on my builds but still often end up with many ships loaded to the gills. Mainly what it comes down to is options and flexibility. I don't like getting stuck in avoidable situations because I wasn't prepared.

I also struggle to run less than 3 combat ships. It doesn't feel like a proper "fleet" without at least 3 ships using their guns.

I always bring at least 1 large ship, and then usually a medium to go along with it. After that I sprinkle small ships in for extra firepower/activations

Either several larges (2-3) or a large with small escorts. Almost never without a large

- MC75+Liberty +Home One

- 2X Home ones

- A large escorting a Neb or 4 hammerheads or some CR90s

I'm primarily an Imperial player and tend to run multiple VSDs. As someone who grew up with the original trilogy, I love the uniformity of multiple triangular hulls on the table. VSDs are my stand-ins for generic "Star Destroyers"... they look the part, behave in a suitably appropriate way, and have the added benefit of being much cheaper to buy than FFG's ISD expansion (I bought two spare VSDs for $11 each on Amazon). I also find that the VSDs scale better with the other ships in the game than the ISDs do. I like pushing squadrons though, too, so I tend to bring TIE Bombers and Fighters along as well.

All my lists are of lightly upgraded multiples of 1 or 2 types with fighter support. Looks more cinematic this way too. Also easier to manuver the fleet when all ships turn and move the same way!

We're two peas in a pod. You could say I'm mostly a visual player. The game has to look good on the table! ๐Ÿ˜†

I advocate for the use of lightly upgraded ships in my home games because the people I play Armada against are not hardcore gamers, and too many moving parts ends up being confusing and limiting to their enjoyment. While sometimes I like the depth that lots of upgrades give to each ship, I also love to see as many Capitol ships as possible on the table, while still keeping the game both as fluid and casual as possible.

ESPECIALLY given the size of the Eratta/FAQ compared to how often I actually get to play, making me have to constantly remember which upgrade either needs to be different than written, or clarified.

Flabbing out your ship is not the way I go. Peaces on the board give you options and opportunities and fun.....Just playing a couple of great big flabby ships against another pair is I find a bit Boring. So for me itโ€™s just the number of upgrades needed to enhance the efficacy of the specific ship ( so maybe ecm and a reroll for a combat monkey or expanded hanger/extended comms for a carrier).

I often would run an almost bare bones imp 1 with an imp msu set up.

Yes.

Both. Any, and all of these. What is this strange idea you imply of only playing in one style? There are many ships, and many ways to kit them out. Try them all, enjoy them all.

Just need more time to play....

7 TRC 90โ€™s or bust.

Yes that will always end up in a lot of busted ships one way or another.

dont forget the 90B SW7 equipped flank blockers or engine tec 90B ram torpedoes.

I prefer using large ships, so I vote Quality.

However, I'm well aware that activation advantage is really important, which is why I like to equip large ships with fewer upgrades so that it's possible to bring 2 or 3 of them.

IME MSU builds can overwhelm and grind down a single Star Destroyer, but if that SD is nearly naked, I can afford to lose it, and I'm able to destroy multiple enemy small ships and win by a comfortable margin.

I must say i do enjoy the 'hero ship' cornerstone of a fleet. So I'll always sink points, probably more than is necessary, into one ship.

Now I have to admit I have done that from time to time, while still keeping the majority of the fleet pretty basic.

Off-topic question: Why doesn't this forum have a legit Poll system?

That's been a feature of internet forums for nearly 20 years!

If this forum had a poll system, then we could vote on Quantity vs Quality and this thread would tabulate the results for us to see.
