iso range ruler

By Uncrustable, in Star Wars: Armada

Looking to buy 1 or more extras as the orginal is wearing down.

What range ruler is recommended?

Reveiws of some of them say they are not accurate.

Seems odd to me that FFG doesn't sell them when they sell extras of everything else (and the included ruler in the core set is the least durable thing that you need to play)

Did FFG used to sell them? Or give them out at events?

Hard to be when there isn't consistency between FFG range rulers (event prizes aside, even two core sets can come with different lengths.)

Well didn't know that haha. I bet that makes for some interesting competitive games.

Thanks! Going to order the above set

There are also squadron movement versions of those rulers, which have an inwards curve at each end so you can place them against the squad base and then place the base at the other end. Much better for moving them.

Keep the original just in case you get some really weird pushback at a tournament, but the acrylic ones will actually be more consistent.

Also, from what I remember, the acrylic prize ones don’t quite match the ones in the core set either

Also, in a competitive event you can always request to use the same range ruler as your opponent (though it might be yours or theirs.)

The acrylic prize ones don't even match each other ☹️

I, personally, would request a third player's ruler if it came down to it. But that is mostly from an old, gw red whipy stick thing.

I can see the indent being useful at the “0” end, but if you had an indent at the other end, wouldn’t your squad no longer be “within” that distance?

The curve is added onto the end of the straight portion so it's the same distance, just quicker to line up.

Yes, the squad range rulers have two curved ends and are exactly one squad base diameter shorter than the range they represent. I didn't notice that before buying, and was quite puzzled before I figured it out, but now i think they are quite handy. You just still should keep a regular range 1-5 ruler around for various upgrade measurements.

I prefer the acrylic range rulers...

But I think the safest course of action is to wait for the Clone Wars Starters, which will contain the range and movement tools. FFG hasn't said anything about them changing, but you never know.

It would be terrible to spend money on a fancy range ruler set from Etsy, only to find out in December that the rulers have changed, and you've just wasted your money.

I'd suggest sitting tight for 2 months and seeing exactly what's in the Clone Wars Starters.

When we can all start playing comps again you will probably win a few.

FFG told us about command/speed dials not coming with future expansions and hinted at pass tokens getting more utility, and made a SKU available to accommodate the changes, well in advance of anyone even needing them.

If new rulers or other tools were necessary they would have made a SKU for it and it would have been made available with the rest of the Clone Wars pre-orders, because that would be necessary to play and would require production and distribution lead time. This isn't Steve Jobs-era Apple where they're going to go "One more thing" and reveal a secret un-leaked product ready-to-ship, and doing that for a required component would be the dickest of moves.
