Republic - Aces + Support

By Schanez, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So with the release of the LAAT/i I am now deep in theorycrafting for the upcoming combos. Now I do like me some Aces, but I always found it... So so in terms of straight Obi+Ani+Ric builds. So here is what I cooked up recently! Would love to hear your opinions.

  • Anakin Skywalker: CLT
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi: CLT
  • "Hound": Aayla Secura, Ghost Company, Suppresive Gunner

  • Anakin Skywalker: CLT
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi: CLT
  • "Wolfe": Aayla Secura, Ahsoka Tano, R4-P Astromech / "Wolfe": Plo Koon, Ahsoka Tano, R4-P Astromech

ARC-170 with Reinforce seems like an extremely powerful and tanky bruiser. Ahsoka can engage the Focus Token on the Aces, which have spare points to grab R4 Astromechs to help drop the stress from the Red Focus action. The "Hound" list just seems like an extremely powerful one with the rerolls on the Jedi from the LAAT/i as well as the Focus > Coordinate with Suppresive Gunner and Ghost Company combo. Those depletes might force the enemy into taking Blue Maneuvers which will help aim the bullseye of the Aces for CLT.

I want to move a few points off the support ship onto the Jedi. These things are kinda tough, but they'll still probably give up their points. Having more substantial and self-sufficient aces seems like a good plan.

Suppressive Gunner doesn't necessarily impress me at low initiative; the Deplete can often be cleared with a blue move. Forcing a blue move or two can be OK, but often won't be super impactful. You also have to actually roll the eye results, and that won't always happen. Aayla and Ghost Company are OK, but you can't chain their linked actions. I think I'd only take one. 7th Fleet Gunner might be worth considering on the LAAT, particularly if sticking with CLT. Just seems more immediate than getting someone to do a blue to get an easier bullseye. Just sling more dice now. Just 7FG is a pretty cheap option, for more toys on the ace.

For the Jedi, maybe upgrading one to 7B (Aethersprite Anakin Implies Extended). That can be pretty expensive, but adding some droids would be good. C1-10P, R4-P17, and a generic R2 Astromech are all pretty solid. Even R4-P on the Jedi might be really nice... That one time you need to pull a blue it might be nice to have a fully open dial. I can't get my head around R2-A6, but I know a lot of folks liked it. And a low-bid list might like Sense. Obi-Wan is great, but Mace with Heightened Perception is cheaper (1 pt CLT, 3 points 7B), and that might make sense depending on the other upgrades.

Same would hold for a Wolffe variant. Only one force crew/gunner (you only get one Force per turn anyhow, so can't use both abilities), to improve the Jedi.

//

Examples, not at all definitive, just a few different ways to ramp up the Jedi a bit:

  • Anakin (CLT, C1-10P)
  • Mace (Heightened Perception, CLT, R4-P17)
  • Wolffe (Aayla, R4-P)

or

  • Anakin (7B)
  • Obi-Wan (CLT)
  • 212th (7th Fleet Gunner)

or

  • Anakin (CLT, C1-10P)
  • Obi-Wan (CLT, Sense, R2-A6)
  • Hound (7th Fleet Gunner)

I am a massive fan of 7FG combined with CLT.

Gets my vote.

The only thing that concerns me with LAAT+ 2 ace is that there is no good way to keep the LAAT from being nuked. Fine if that takes a couple turns too long, but I imagine it often won't, particularly if you aren't reinforcing. Even if you are, you become super clunky, so I'm not sure how much it helps.

I want an ace in my list, but I also want some target priority difficulties for my opponent. So far, I can't escape all the 4 ship variants.

212th + 7th Fleet Gunner has been the sweet spot for the CLT support lists I've looked at. I want to like Plo Crew to give a useable reinforce to the LAAT, but the 10 points are hard to swallow.

I took this list for a spin against a VT-49 Sloane Swarm last night. I ended up losing a close game; apparently CLT Jedi don't do as well when they blank their green dice multiple times.

(62) Anakin Skywalker [Delta-7 Aethersprite]
(4) R5 Astromech
(5) Calibrated Laser Targeting
Points: 71

(49) Obi-Wan Kenobi [Delta-7 Aethersprite]
(4) R5 Astromech
(4) Calibrated Laser Targeting
Points: 57

(51) 212th Battalion Pilot [Laat/i Gunship]
(10) Plo Koon
(9) Seventh Fleet Gunner
Points: 70

Total points: 198

The Laat was focus fired and obliterated in the second round of dice rolling, but a lot of that was a crit chain (three ships landed one crit each from the reinforced flank, then the last did three hits into a Hull Breach). I figure with less hot red dice, it lasts one more round of focus fire.

The Laat was worth about 5 damage on the VT-49 in those two rounds of combat and could have been more had I needed more rerolls. Focus firing it also let me flank the VT-49 with the Jedi and get my initial round of fire in without having to worry about my opponents reinforce.

Plo crew felt good for the purple reinforces and free crit fixes, but really didn't earn his points this game. And losing access to Plo in the Delta is rough when thinking about Hyperspace variants.

Aayla Secura on Wolfe sounds interesting, as you can Focus > Coordinate and have reroll on front arc still. I have to admit, Plo sounds more tempting, just because Arc with Reinforce seems powerful.

A cheap support ships for Republic might be R2-D2 actually.

  1. Anakin Skywalker: Delta-7B, Sense
  2. Obi-Wan Kenobi: CLT
  3. R2-D2: Aayla Secura, Ion Cannon Turret

It's the cheapest crew carrier I think.

Another romance with Arc.

  1. Anakin Skywalker: Delta-7B
  2. Obi-Wan Kenobi: CLT
  3. Jag: Plo Koon

Arc can Lock from friendly defending, Reinforce as he moves. Anakin can pew pew three dice. Obi does his thing. If they focus Arc they leave Jedi free to daka. If they focus Jedi, they leave Arc free to daka daka. Remaining three points can go into intimidation on Arc or just bid.

I think Aayla in R2 is not worth it so much, maybe you could use palpatine which is cheaper. Aayla in a 3 attack ARC, on the other hand...

I really like her on the Arc, but she is just so expensive, you end up putting so many points into a rather fragile chassis.

Plo Koon gives the Jag a Reinforce and Jag himself can grab a Lock, which with his I3 can trigger quite a lot.

My dream team for now is Annie 7B with Obi CLT and Jag with Plo in board.

I really like the idea of Ani and Obi with CLT paired with Hound with Aayla, Ghost Company and Seventh Fleet Gunner.

I've only run it a handful of times in FC but I'm sold on R2 and Yoda with dorsal turret jammed in the aft arc. Dagobah makes for a nice little coordinate ship.

I was looking at ideas and talking about the Republic status with some friends from local group and this is what I came up with for Hyperspace.

  • Ric Olie: R4-P
  • "Jag": Plo Koon
  • "Broadside": Ion Cannon Turret
  • Blue Squadron Protector: Dedicated
  • Blue Squadron Protector: Dedicated

There is no bid for Ric, which might be problematic, but one could drop Dedicated for 2 points. Not much... And I like Dedicated... But still something. I would really not downgrade Ion Cannon to Dorsal.

For Extended, I would fly this I guess.

  • Obi-Wan: D-7B
  • Plo Koon: CLT, C1-10P, Sense
  • "Jag": Aayla Secura
