HMP Rambling

By MasterShake2, in X-Wing

It's very rambly, first attempt doing this so I'm aware it's rough, but hopefully someone takes something useful away from it šŸ˜›

It looks good! I dont really know if you are looking for feedback, but the one thing that I would add, is some sort of overlay, so as a viewer I can see which card your talking about. That way I dont need to go look it up, ect. Gold Squadron Podcast is a good example of that.

Correction: Concussion bombs are 3 points, not 6. And you give a good rundown of why that is (as opposed to everybody on the forums screaming about crits under shields).

It's the MMP that's strangely over-costed. Even the HMP doesn't want it - it already has the arcs, and it likes locks anyway, so concussions or clusters are fine. Maybe if you want a worse version of Prockets since the HMP can't take those, but prockets are only barely good, and they are STILL cheaper (6 points vs 8).

That’s quite an extensive review with a lot of great input and consideration (what comparable options are more/less viable)!

You brought up a point That caught my attention about the Synched Laser Cannon: ā€œIf you are calculating...ā€

It got me to check the order of steps in Attack rules and it looks like if the ship attacks with the cannons and spends the calculate, the defender does get their range bonus die. (Tried to post a screenshot of the rules but the file was to big for some reason).

...
2. Attack dice

A. Roll attack dice

B. Modify attack dice <-calculate is spent here, ship is no longer ā€œcalculatingā€œ afterward

3. Defense dice

A. Roll defense dice: the defender determines the number of defense dice to roll

Since the calculate would be spent in 2.A, that means the attacker is no longer calculating by The time the defense dice are counted out.

It depends, if range bonuses are checked when the attack is declared (which I think is the case, but I'm not positive) spending wouldn't affect it. OTOH, if it doesn't check until the relevant dice pool is generated, the the secondary effect of Synced cannons only works if you don't spend the calc on offense.

Yeah, I actually went back and checked it, but in my defense I definitely said 3-4 would be a more appropriate cost šŸ˜›

Unfortunately, the rules reference specifies that modifiers to defense dice (such as range bonus) is part of the 3A roll defense dice step. The attack range is determined at the start of the attack but that is distinct from the modification of the dice pool.
