So I'm painting Cassian tonight, and I had a question for the group. This is more a Star Wars Lore question than a game question.
What the heck is that weird donut-looking thing on his backpack???
Cassian's Backpack
Star Wars backpacks are made of random trash and they rarely, if ever, explain what the trash is or does. Look at the Sandtrooper backpacks from ANH.
His lunch box?
I think that in the Rogue One book it's explained to be some kind of charge pack for his blaster, but i'm not 100% sure about that.
Like arnoldrew said above though Star Wars has lots of unexplained gizmos, so you can headcannon basically anything 🤷♂️
Ive seen some of these things being called coolers , but given his jacket, it seems unlikely.any way here is the source

Oddly enough, when Mando goes there, there's a droid bartender, but the IG heads are still there too.

I thought the backpack looked bad, so I filled the hole in his back with some wall spackle (clay would have worked well too), primed and painted over. You would have to know it was missing to notice, and even then it's barely visible.
Overall I think the miniature looks much better without it.
I just thought it was a hemorrhoid donut pillow for space hemorrhoids. I didn't want to say anything to the mini as I assembled him because I was afraid that he'd be embarrassed and always roll blanks.

Clearly the jacket is to keep him warm in cold environments and look stylish, and the backpack is to keep him cool when he's in environments that are unsuited for wearing a parka, but he doesn't want to ruin his look. Jedha didn't strike me as an especially cold looking planet so I have to assume Cassian's heavy jacket is a matter of preference, not utility.
