What am I missing?

By Gupa-nupa, in X-Wing

Im looking to get onto Imperials more (aces specifically). I play seppies for swarm and rebels for beef. Right now my GE collection consists of

- 3x TIE/ln Fighters (Core set + 1 blister pack)

- 1 TIE Advanced x1

- 1 TIE Defender

My plan is to get an Interceptor, and a v1. I would like to get a phantom, but I am trying to avoid buying 1.0 ships. What is my collection missing?

Try to beg borrow steal: a phantom, lambda, and some bombers....

nvm no 1.0 👍

Tie striker gives you access to duchess and its fun to fly. Tie reaper which has 2.0 cards in it of you want to try a support ship but it can be more difficult than the lambda.

I would get the v1 before the interceptor grand inquisitor is clutch.

That about does it.

  • TIE/x1: Vader. I indulge in Maarek Stele sometimes, despite never having played the video games, but he's meh.
  • TIE Interceptor: Soontir.
  • TIE/v1: Grand Inquisitor and Fifth Brother are strong. Seventh Sister is OK (despite being oddly priced more than 5thB). This is kind of the only ace ship you might need two of.
    • Say... I suppose that means you kind of need the Hotshots and Aces kit.
  • TIE Phantom is next. Echo is solid. Whisper might be bad now after layers of nerfs.
  • TIE Striker is... hrm... maybe. Duchess went up, but she's probably not that bad. Might just be better to run a v1.
  • TIE Defender is something I like, but not always the most popular. Best bet is probably a Delta mixed in as a low-I pilot, cleaning stuff up if the opponent goes for the higher aces first. Going for the expensive pilots usually works out worse.
    • Are folks doing well with Advanced Sensors Rexler Brath these days?
  • I suppose Redline in the TIE Punisher gets honorable mention. Not really an ace, and not 2e without a conversion kit, but if I'm trying to fill out the list...

More thoughts: A Reaper (these are 2e ships, don't let someone convince you otherwise, whatever the box looks like) or Lambda to support aces isn't terrible, but isn't really needed in 2e. Likewise VT-49. Using RAC and a loaded ace, or two pocket aces, is semi-plausible. It's kind of a cool variant, but not quite as strong as just running aces.

I concur with interceptor (soontir), 1-2 v1s, and striker. I like flying duchess with 5th bro gunner or pure sabacc.

I hate to say it, because they are REALLY hard to find and expensive, but I love love love the Assault Gunboat. The first one was so awesome that I HAD to get a second one.

Outside of that, yes, you need at least one TIE Interceptor, though the argument could be made that you want more than one; at 36 points, I find the naked i4 to be a pretty sweet generic. For that matter, the i1 at 31 points is good too.

Stikers are fun as well, but the Adaptive Ailerons give them that weird pre-movement boost that makes them hard to fly in any kind of formation (except with other Strikers). Still, there’s one unique Striker (Duchess) that makes the boost optional, and running just one as a flanker is a decent strategy.

Most of the other Imperial small bases are totally usable but not really necessary. You can sort of ignore the TIE Aggressor (or as I refer to it, the Fragile Imperial Y-Wing), and I haven’t had great results with the TIE Bomber, though I also haven’t tried to do much with it. But the TIE Phantom is on the edge of infuriatingly broken, if flown well and upgraded correctly.

As for the medium and large based Imperial ships, the TIE Punisher is pretty neat, but again, I haven’t used it a lot. I really like the TIE Reaper, which is deceptively fast, because Adaptive Ailerons plus its regular movement combined with the medium base make it REALLY rocket around. Of course, this sort of exacerbates the TIE Striker phenomenon, and can make them tough to handle, but capable of some really surprising tricks. The large bases (the Decimator and Lambda Shuttle) seem quite strong, though I have far more experience with the Lambda than the Decimator, and not a ton of table time with either.
