Assigning Damage

Is it possible to assign extra damage to a single unit?

For example, I was playing against the orcs, which often gain extra hammers for controlling damaged units. I did 3 damage, and there were two units defending, one with 5 hp and one with 1 hp. Could I place all 3 damage counters on the 1 hp unit, thus preventing the extra power boost? The rule book says you may put extra damage counters in anticipation of any effects. But are these the effects already in play?

As far as assigning damage goes, its my understanding you can assign as much as you want to a single unit, presumably anticipating your opponent "saving" that unit via a tactic card which increases hit points or something to that nature.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as units that gain power from damaged units, damage is assigned after power is totalled, so it shouldn't make a difference for that particular battle.

You can always assign more damage then it would take to kill a unit.

Correct, power is totaled before damage is assigned/applied so the extra power for being damaged would not be counted in the current combat.
