Pass Tokens: In the CW Starters or No?

By Cruzer, in Star Wars: Armada

So I'm getting this sinking feeling that neither the GAR or CIS starters will include the new pass tokens. Don't know about anyone else, but I'm a player who's been in this game a while and I definitely have zero reason to buy a dials pack OTHER than those tokens (haven't bought the SSD, so none there either XP). I'm not saying they need to include them in future expansions if they're not doing that for the speed and command dials, but it would make sense to include a handful of them with the starters (if they're gonna see enough use that they need to be included in a dials pack).

Seriously, one or the other, either throw them in with the starters or release them with single-ship expansions! :P

Are they maybe included with the upgrade cards too? There’s no way I’m buying the dual pack just for tokens. I hope they wouldn’t be that ignorant.

The Upgrade Card Collection doesn't seem to say anything about them, so I'm not confident that they'd put them in that pack either.

I agree, @Cruzer. I am not buying the dials pack just for those tokens. Honestly, if I discover I need them, I will probably buy some nicer ones from Admiral Tater anyway.

I can’t spell.

The starters include extra command and speed dials (so people starting with Clone Wars don't need the dial pack until their 3rd or 4th expansion) - I can't imagine they'd do that but not include enough pass tokens to follow whatever the new rule will be. We don't have the complete breakdown yet, though. Probably won't learn more until after US Thanksgiving holiday.

I think they're considered non-essential tokens and just need to be identified as pass tokens to be valid, so worst-case that (using third-party or homemade/coins/tokens from other games) might be what FFG expects of existing players who aren't getting into Clone Wars factions.

If I find I need pass tokens, I will simply use these (I don’t play in tournaments so they’ll suffice); I have a ton of them and they almost always go unused.

Admiral Tater has acrylic for 2.00 each (unpainted), or $4 fully painted.

Is there some new information that has spurred this worry? I don’t think we’ve seen everything the pack has to offer...

If you mean new information about the fleet starters, no, we haven't gotten any new content reveals or component counts.

If you mean why there's concern about pass tokens in the first place, in this thread: "Michael Gernes told in an interview, that we'll see a new mechanic where fleets with lower activation count receive a number of Pass Tokens." We don't have exact details of how the rule will work or how many tokens will be needed, but the dial pack product description mentions it comes with 5 pass tokens.

Yes, I suppose I’m aware of the pass tokens. I guess I’m just wondering where the pessimism that pass tokens won’t be included in the starter is coming from? I would agree that it would be a major missed opportunity...but I don’t think we’ve had a starter set that has required you to buy something else to play?

You mean 6 arquitens, 3 ISD’s, 3 Packs of each squadron, and 2 SSD’s aren’t required to play? I’ve been bamboozled!

It seems more likely that the pass tokens in the dials pack are meant to give players additional access to pass tokens, especially those who want to play only Rebels/Imperials and aren't diving into Clone Wars.

Don't buy the dials pack. Use pennies.

Even if the starter sets come with five pass tokens each, that's not an unlikely scenario. I have rarely seen people use round tokens at tournaments, despite the fact that they come with every Core Set. People just use dice.

I mean....if it's allegedly a "core game change" one would expect it to be in the Core Set....right?

Looks at number of dice in the Core Set

Or better yet. Didn’t armada come with little tokens to count the round numbers? Just use those if you havent tossed them after Finding a better round tracker

I remember in warmachine a bunch of flexo nerds would use Championship Coins from that one Regionals they won to just dunk on the fact they had them and their opponents didnt. It was way cooler than using the game components if you could just use trophies apparently, to mark your VPs and all

Unrelatedly, coming soon from CGYSO: Friendship Coins/Pass Token supplements with our signatures on them! These definitely arent washers I went down and bought at a hardware store and am selling at 400% profit! That would be morally "wrong."

They also come with the dials pack.

Oh wait...

I think the words you’re looking for are “unbridled greed.”

Businesses need to make money.

And in the words of my namesake, "I'm not a businessman, I'm a business, man!"

They're one use only, and the pack only comes with 5 right? Just use a die. A regular d6 will work fine. For similar point/token/counters in other games that's the go-to solution. I like to treat myself to a special one for such cases. My 40k command point die is an metal die with stylized icon numbers for extra cool factor. Until we got some round counter dials we used it's twin to count rounds. Would that be a solution your like?

May depend on how many you can even get. We have no idea how many a fleet could potentially have

They forgot to mention that damage decks are in the starters. They had to clarify that later. A few tokens going unmentioned as well does not seem much of a worry. Starters have typically included all the required tokens.

I think this is the way to think about it. Plus it is an easily solvable problem if they are not. Most of us will likely personalize them in any event. Just the typical preview article foul up, move along.

I have 4 champ coins

Wait, people are worried about what isn't mentioned in the Fleet Starters, token wise?

Things like...

I don't know...

Defense Tokens?

They're not written as being included. I mean, the only tokens as written as being included are Obstacles.

So let's not make judgements until its been Unboxed... :D
