If Single Ship Expansions were released for the Clone Wars Starters...

By Revan Reborn, in Star Wars: Armada

I was wondering...

If Clone Wars single ship expansions for the Acclamator, Consular, Munificent, and Hardcell were released at the same time as the Clone Wars Fleet Starters, how would that affect your purchase decisions?

I think it's safe to say that the majority of the people on this forum are existing Armada players, which means we already own an Armada core set and all of the accessories we need to play the game.

If I had the choice to buy Single Ship Expansions, I wouldn't even bother with the Clone Wars Fleet Starters because I don't need the Starter accessories. If I had the choice to buy two $20 small ship expansions and a $30-40 medium ship expansion, I'd much rather do that. And I'd definitely would buy more Clone Wars ship expansions at launch than I'm going to with the Clone Wars Starters.

Simply put, I would have bought two Munificents and that’s it (well, plus a squadron pack or two). I don’t need or feel compelled to have Hardcell transports. But who knows... I might end up quite enjoying them. So I can’t complain.

I would only buy one of each starter instead of the two I plan to buy... I still question my decision... Maybe I should just get one of each and then wait for the single expansions.

As for the singles. If they released then simultaneously, I would get one hardcell, one consuler, two Munificents and two Aclimators.

I'd have bought 3 Acclamators right out the gate. Instead I'm getting 2 Republic starters, and I'm probably just going to sell 2 Consulars and a ton of V-19s and maybe an Aethersprite with the rulers/dials/tokens/etc. If I wasn't afraid that Acclamators will be hot, I might have considered watching ebay for a loose Acclamator, but it's definitely the star of the Republic starter and I'm just not going to take that chance.

I think that there should have been a version of the starter boxes that had just the ships and new upgrade cards marketed for existing players, kind of like how the next generation videogame consoles are coming with budget versions at launch.

It wouldn't have changed my plan. I buy at least 2 of each expansion for Armada. When TCW wave 1 ships are finally released individually, I will get 2 of each, probably way more Munificents. It just won't look right if I can't field a huge fleet of them and one of the larges as the command ship.

Would still buy the starters for both (good to have a few small ships, the vanilla squadrons for a faction, and spare dice/maneuver tools) but definitely would only limit it to one each. The value really drops after you've acquired the first ship of each type, not to mention that Core Sets likely will also have some exclusive upgrade cards (and Ace Squadrons) that won't come in other packs. TLDR: I still would get at least one of each starter, but only singles after that.

Nothing changes for me. My plan was always a single fleet starter and then filling the rest in with the single ship expansions when they release.

I refuse to believe they won’t do those ships as standalone releases.

I will certainly not buy two more starter packs, even if it means I that I have to wait a few extra weeks. I don't need all those rulers, dice and damage decks, so I don't want to pay for them.

Entirely dependent on the price difference between buying a starter vs the three ships included, as well as if there are different cards in the standalone vs the starter. I don't need the extras but I'm not against having them either.

I believe you're right but I'm such a consumer *****/plasticrack addict...

I’m wondering if the damage decks will be different and updated. We have no concrete info on them yet. Might be worth getting two starters to have two copies of the damage deck if it’s new. I think it would be cool if it reflected the clone wars specifically. Doesn’t x wing have faction specific damage decks now or something like that?

I thought X-wing’s faction specific damage decks were only different in the artwork.

If you mean new mechanics, since we can use old upgrade cards we should be able to use old damage decks as well, so I don't think so. If you mean new as in artwork, that would be cool.

Yes, only different art.

I agree that the single ship expansions for the Clone Wars Starter ships will probably contain different Commanders, ship titles, and some upgrade cards than those in the Clone Wars Fleet Starters, because that's what FFG has done in the past. So even if FFG did release the single ship expansions alongside the Fleet Starters, Armada completionists would need to buy the Fleet Starters anyway.

I think that it's mistake for FFG not to give Armada players the choice of Starters and single ship expansions. I think launch window sales of Clone Wars Armada would be considerably higher if single ship expansions were available. I don't know why FFG is passing up this ripe opportunity to give customers what they want.

Thanks for clarifying.

I was. I’m trying to be more responsible now.

If these had dropped at Armada launch day it would’ve been at least 2 fleet starters for each faction for me

Just like the core set and the victory/nebulon/cr90/rebel squad 1/imp squad 1 expansions, if they release stand alone packs for the ships, they're going to have different upgrade cards. I doubt the squad packs will have haor chall prototypes and "axe" in them either. So wait for everything to be spoiled before making purchase decisions

As others have said, it would depend largely on the cost of the individual ships and packs versus the starter set as well as the cards included with the individual packs. The initial release had new, expansion specific, cards in the individual sets, so if that precedent were to continue it would be a major contributing factor.

All things equal, Likely two of each starter. I run the local group so having 4 extra sets of the core exclusive components (Tools, dice, decks, tokens objectives, ect..) is an easy way to hook interested players who don't like the starter set options, or are turned off by the initial buy-in cost. Running a community and recruiting new players often feels like what I imagine drug dealers feel like. Hook 'em on the free product, help ease them into it, then keep them coming back for that delicious plastic crack. lol

In the past getting ahold of spare components to help more casual players and people uninterested in the starter ships get started was very much a hassle. Usually involved haggling with multiple people online to assemble one kit.
