Summer 2020 X-Wing Survey Infographics

By Nsara, in X-Wing

After many hours of work and even more procrastination, the Summer 2020 Survey infographics are live!

That is 4 pages, featuring 24 charts and lists detailing things ranging from COVID-19 attitudes, Online play during the epidemic, collection size, feelings about the Force mechanic (should it be nerfed?), community involvement etc, with data taken from 1,085 people.

Check it out: https://fridaynightxwing.wordpress.com/2020/09/04/summer2020-survey/

Also I am encouraging X-Wing community bloggers, youtubers etc to analyze and discuss the data, as this is not just my information, I just ask that people be respectful and link back to my work if they use it as well as to not wholesale steal and repost my various charts.

A few tidbits of data to get your interest:

  • The #7 Most Wanted ship (of a list of 22 options) was the T-85 X-Wing with a total of 4.8% of the vote
  • The Least Wanted ship from that list was the WTK-85A Transport (aka the Bestoon's Legacy from tRoS, or that one ship that the heroes stole from the desert planet for a few minutes)
  • 69.2% of those surveyed said they would not attend a large X-Wing event until most healthcare organizations said it was safe to do so. (Due to COVID-19)
  • 60.7% of those surveyed are subscribed to the r/XWingTMG Subreddit on Reddit.com
  • 20.8% of players also play Star Wars: Legion, and 18.5% of players play Star Wars: Armada
  • 175 people have played in 3 or more online events during COVID-19

...and there are many many more facts and figures listed on the site linked above.

A lot of food for thought!

And a lot of compilation work, many thanks.

Some surprises, e.g. I would have expected more Gaslands than 0.5%.

0.5% is like... 4 or 5 people sadly. I kinda want to pick up the game, but I don't quite get how templates work or are acquired? I also lack a FLGS within 40 miles, so where to play is an issue too...

Templates work like X-wing. The more you "stress" your car (basically by e.g. trying to turn while going too fast, you acquire hazard tokens (for what I actually use old 1ed X-wing stress tokens, perfect), the more likely you are to slide or flip away from the template.

Templates you just print out and glue onto some cardboard. No need for fancy acrylics (although you can buy such from 3rd party vendors). Gaslands is really easy accessible. Just some toy cars, (no need to paint, although there is a huge modding and painting scene), the one rulesbook, 6sided dice and paper, and some random stuff as obstacles. As it does not generate sales of moar models for the game store, not that many game stores seem to carry the game.

If one likes the game I recommend buying Gaslands dice, but even these can be DIY.

I think this is one of those games where if you have local friends to play, you can easily manage to have it played around a kitchen table. Or on a folding table in the garage if you want outdoors / more air out of abundance of caution in covid days.

The entry cost is super low. I found it a little clunky compared to xwing, but never having to buy more stuff is a neat draw (unless you know, you want more cars to modify).
