Official obstacle pack

By M0N0LITH, in Star Wars: Armada

So as obstacles have increased over time and as Star Wars Armada is a Tabletop game, I think it‘s time for an official obstacle pack!! (Asteroids, Debris, Space Station, Dust Cloud, Gravity Rifts, Exogorths, Purrgils)

Of course it‘s easier to fly over simple cardboard asteriods and debris but it would add so much more look and feel to the gameplay.

As you all know the best available obstacle set was shut down due to lack of licensing but until now there is no real alternative...

Therefore I am really hoping that FFG will publish a complete set with the upcoming Clone Wars Waves!

Whats you opinion an that topic?

More power to people who want it, but I’m not inclined to buy a pack that makes the game harder to play as I’ll have to swap out the plastic for cardboard whenever it actually counts.

It does look neat though.

Easiest would be to have acrylic stands that match the cardboard. In this case you can simply remove the obstacle and have the cardboard underneath...

Armada is far too "bumpy" as it is. I could see myself picking these up as smashing them on the floor after 2 games. But that is just me, if you love them go for it.

I love my home-made 3D obstacles. But I will readily admit that they actually get in the way of game play.

I would rather some super thin terrain bases so the ships don’t wobble when on them. Like OHP transparency thin.

@Rmcarrier1 very well done! Looks like a good amount of work have gone into them!?!

Already thought that obstacles are not for everyone as gameplay does get difficult sometimes when ships get close but I think it kind of completes the setup...

That gave me an idea I maybe could work with.

Magnets!

Not saying they wont do it. But I really doubt they will do it any time soon. If they were going to do it when clone wars release they would have anounced it during gencon

Thank you! Much appreciated.

The bases are simply crafting wood planks carved with a coping saw (make sure you have a vice to hold the wood in place). I decided to layer the wood planks, as they were rather thin. On my debris field, I made the mistake of doing this after I had already cut out the first pass; for my asteroids, I simply glued two layers together and then cut out the shapes.

For stands, I used wooden dowels , but you could conceivably use wooden Shish kebab sticks. I then painted the whole thing in flat black. I've thought about using a splatter technique with white paint to get a star effect, but I will probably skip that step -- they're already done, after all.

Finally, I used lava rocks for the asteroid fields and picked up a Hot Wheels Arrestor Cruiser for the debris field. I painted it before essentially ripping it in half using a drill and vice! And voila, 3D obstacle tokens! I'm very happy with them both.

@LinoB has by far the best option for obstacles!

I have created my own Pergil stands, using Mel's Purgil miniatures. The only things I still need are Exgaroth and a dust cloud.

Do we know if the Clone Wars starters come with the same obstacles as the original core set?

As for 3d models, I find the flat cardboard ones easier to use, but we usually do if playing with 3d ones is place them on top of the cardboard versions, so we can just lift them out of the way when needed and still have the cardboard. Especially since we often play at larger point values, it's inevitable that something is getting overlapped eventually.

I'd loved to have 3D obstacles for such a long time and finally bought them from a third party.

I don't think you will ever see an official pack for two reason. X-wing does not have one and it also has a lot of obstacles now. The market there would even be much greater than for Armada. But they have not done it. Hence they won't do it for us.

The second reason might be reason why they don't do it. It makes the game even a bit more messier: you have to remove them whenever an overlap happens. And put em back afterwards. People would want to use them in tournaments and this makes stuff even slower.

I'd loved to see it, but it won't happen.

Combatzone Scenery in the UK makes 3d asteroids, debris, dust fields, purgills, exogorths, and rifts with the same base shapes as the official obstacles so you can use the cardboard and put their obstacles on top.

I have a set, they're very nice. Sadly, finishing painting them coincided with lockdown so I haven't used them in a real game yet. :(

They also make lots of other shapes and space stations.

Second to Gilarius' suggestion of CombatZone Scenery. I have a set painted up that we've been using, but I will agree. They get in the way (especially with certain objectives) and come off the board a lot. Having said that, they also add a ton of presence to the play area.

I would prefer some neoprene debris feilds instead. Even easier to fly over and more difficult to constantly bump all over the place during ship movements

Oh yes, especially the Demolisher with holes in it is SO gorgeous. In my last game, I couldn't use them because I misplaced the bases, but now, I found them again and am looking forward to the next game...

Even though I started playing Armada in 2015 and got these obstacles when they were available (however, I didn't buy the X-Wing Nebulon B which looked incredible and which I should have probably bought right along), I still would be extremely excited about FFG obstacles.

I'd much rather have an official Armada Obstacle Pack than dealing with f***ing Etsy, which usually cost 4X what a retail product would cost, plus shipping.

Also, presumably an official Obstacle Pack would be smartly designed so that any size ship could overlap the base of the obstacle without it causing a problem with the obstacle miniature on the stand.

Also, they could be used in OP.

It got mentioned previously, but without a link: https://combatzone-scenery.co.uk/Armada-Debris-Field

I got the Space Whales (picture not mine) - as I recall, even the shipping wasn't to bad (though that was a year ago, before the current international shipping issues)...

The Etsy product you linked is delivered unpainted, whereas if FFG made an official Obstacles Pack, it would probably be painted, like Armada ships are. And as I previously mentioned, the issue with 3D obstacles is that ships and squadrons can't overlap them properly. Either the 3D Obstacle would have to be swapped out for the standard cardboard obstacle, or the ship would have to be removed from its plastic base.

I think if FFG took a crack at designing 3D Obstacles for Armada, they could figure out a better solution.

These and the rest of the Combatzone Scenery obstacles are amazing and I use them in almost all of my demos and home games. While they are great for showcasing the great game of Armada, I don't see the need for an official obstacle pack as they really just make the game longer, especially in a tournament setting. Anyone who does want obstacles in their home games though has plenty of options to purchase them through Combatzone Scenery, @LinoB , etc.
