Mystery Tie / Tie Vigilance. 3D print and paint

By Dwing, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I saw this video on Youtube Mystery Tie from Return of the Jedi.

I really like his fan canon and found it funny to try and make a version for the game. The idea of making an old Tie fighter Toy with battery pack into something like a real tie appealed to me to. I remixed a Tie Fighter I found on Thingiverse, added the upgraded engine, center cannon, enlarged the cockpit, and thickened the wings and made them shorter, file can be found here Mystery Tie .

I printed and painted it today and I think it turned out pretty great. "Scourge" Skutu (who is he, my google fu is not strong enough, I can find an ancient Sith, but pretty sure he is not flying around in a tie fighter) also have a great ability to represent the extra center laser cannon. Hope you like it.

If I ever was to make an official dial and ability for this ship, I would probably use Kir Kanos and Carnor Jax for the named pilots, but give them new abilities from their 1.0 versions. Have it have a standard tie dial, except a red speed 5. 4 hull and a ship ability, if you shoot at something in your bulls eye fireing arc, you ad one ion to the result after shooting.

Some info in the 'real' "Scourge" Skutu for you! ;) Loved the video too. Thought the concept of the Emperor's shuttle escorts was cool... Not as cool as the paint job though! Any tips for painting white TIE Fighters? 😆

Thanks. Its not easy to see, but my tie here is White and its a craaaaap colour to paint ;). But light Grey, White, nuln oil, White touch up worked for me.

Neat!

This is excellent. It needs a homebrew pilot named "Kenner" to go with it!

Been thinking about this ship...

  • 2 Attack, 3 Agility, 3 Hull, 1 Shield.
  • Actions: Focus, Red Evade, Red Lock, Barrel Roll
  • Dial: a hair worse than the regular TIE... Speed 5 is Red, maybe, and they have only the 4K not 3 and 4, but otherwise the same
    • For dial and actions, this slight bit more red represents a ship which is a bit less maneuverable than a classic TIE fighter. Red Lock since these have improved cockpits, presumably with improved targeting systems.
  • Upgrades: Cannon, Mod (Talent where appropriate).
  • Ship Ability: Hyperspace Escort. Setup: You may start in reserve. If you do, at the end of Setup, place yourself at Range 0-1 of a friendly Large or Huge ship and beyond Range 3 of any enemy ship.
    • Pretty minor in effect (mostly... being Range 1 in front of a huge ship can get pretty far out into the field), but thematic.
  • Price: 25-26 for an Init 1. I could see making it a point more than a TIE/fo or an M-3A Scyk, to balance out for great support ships like Howlrunner and Admiral Sloane. At +4 over the classic TIE, they might not completely outclass them.
    • I'd make pilots at Init 1, 3, and 4, to match the Initiatives of the various Lambda shuttles.
    • One other thing: it'd be possible to just have *no* non-limited pilots. Give everyone ** or *** or **** dots, to prevent full TIE swarm of these...

This would be a ton of fun in epic...

Maybe extra thick at 4 Hull is the right way to go... that'd certainly justify a higher price tag than a TIE/fo or Scyk, and further differentiate from a TIE Fighter.

Nice, did you use some kind of online card builder for this?

I would keep them fairly simple and make them to be upgraded standard Ties, better hull, small Ion canon built in, but still somewhat cheap. Same dial as I described in the original post. I know there are some inconsistencies in the card, bu the card creator I used kept bugging out, so I got tires of rewriting everything.

Yup, one of my favorites! Infinite Arenas has some fun tools, this is their Homebrew builder . I love playing casually with quickbuilds and this site makes beautiful cards!

@J1mBob has done great work on this!

I went with 4 because I was looking at the 3D model and noticed that they really beefed up the spars on the TIEs. That and the shield may be too much, but I don't think so.

I think it's right, because a 25 point 3+1 Vigilance kinda completely outclasses regular TIE/ln, but a 4+1 can claim a significantly higher cost (29-31 points, maybe). That's pricing with an Ion Cannon in mind. I figure an Ion Cannon on a 2/3/4/1 ship can claim at least a 35 point cost. That's an agility up on a Belbullab, with worse actions, and "only" an Ion weapon.

That's a really strong ship ability. Not as easy to hit with as an Ion Cannon, but the damage is in addition, and you could combine it with Crack Shot. Also Focus > Lock is incredibly potent, even on a 2-dice ship.

I dunno. Maybe the strength of those actions and the powerful ship ability justify a cost significantly higher than a normal TIE Fighter.

I think shields on a glorified Tie/ LN is a bit to much, but an extra hull for the added structure is fine.

Focus/Tl might be to powerfull a combo maybe just a red TL om its own.

I like that the ion is a bit harder to get off, and don't think a regular cannon slot fits this kind of upgraded tie that well, also it opens it up for it carrying all sorts of others cannons.

For the I1, I was thinking something along 27/28 points. First Order gets a shield, white TL and a better dial on their standard Tie/Fos for 25 pts. I think the Ion ability might be worth around 2/3 points.

We're just following the video. It mentions the ship would have shields. I agree with you about Kir Kanos, I'd love to see him as a pilot in this thing.

Yeah I know, Shields are just the only part of his fan canon I personally disagree on, this is the Empire after all ;).

Sure, but the emperor probably wants his guards to last a little longer when he is exposed in a shuttle. :)

The good guards gets the interceptors ;)

I would say this is the precursor to the Royal Guard TIE Interceptor.

This ship is technically seen in Return if the Jedi, I guess they at least are contemporary.

True, but in my mind, once the Royal Guards got their modified TIE Interceptors, the TIE Vigilance was reassigned to elite TIE pilots stationed to the Second Death Star.
