Kavil-cade

By Spinland, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Abandoning the Hyperspace-legal aspect here. I like Y-Wings, I have some StarVipers to play around with, and should have a couple of Fangs available in a few days. Given all that, here's Kavil leading a scurvy crew of generics. I figure he hangs back a little and mops up the wounded from the knife fighters with broadsides.

I reckon I could drop the Fang in favor of a third StarViper but my conversion kit will only be good for two of them and I kind of like the variety of having the Fang in the mix—but I'm not wedded to the idea. Could also easily drop the contraband for a bid; my main idea there was an emergency turret move. That and the Elusive there to help keep him alive to the end game.

EDIT: Why the builder totaled this at 198 I don't get; might be a bug. Should be an even 200.

Exporting from the official app is always super wonky after points adjustments. YASB 2.0 or LaunchBay Next are two alternatives FYI. 🙂

As for your list, yeah Fang Fighter is great, a pair of Vipers is also good. Expect Kavil to die pretty quickly. He's gonna have to get in close to be effective, and he's the same points as everything else but with the lowest agility. Watch out for blocks. Elusive on a 1 agility ship is not amazing though CC will let you recharge it easily enough without leaving you stranded with no action.

Yep, the Squadbuilder "totals" bug is well-known. It'll use old points for the total only.

I'd fly 3x Fangs, but I just like Fangs. *wink*

Anyhow... fine, I guess. No bad pilots, no excessive bids, no fiddly synergies, and not strictly speaking bad upgrades, but... I don't really love Elusive on Kavil. I wouldn't necessarily plan on red moves on a ship with this dial, and rerolls on a single green die are pretty meh. I think it'd be better to go with something else. Ion Turret, Trick Shot after cutting CC, Expert Handling, just a dang Hull Upgrade. Yeah... I really think Elusive is just going to be worse than a Hull on Kavil.

Thanks for the tips! Here's a bit of a tweak. I reckon I could swap the dorsal turret and hull upgrade for a potential 4-dice ion turret; I guess I'm just not experienced enough in how to leverage ionizing ships to visualize what that'd buy me. :)

Do you folks think Kavil's not strong enough to be the anchor of a list like this? I confess the punny list title was the main driver of the idea. ;)

On the Fangs, I like them, and I also like the StarViper; one's fast and flippy but the other's no slouch and for about the same cost has a point of shield (and those bendy barrel rolls are fun). Without adding to the already-silly number of things I've ordered the past couple of days I could field two of each, but that'd mean all generics. Maybe not a bad thing?

I don't really see Kavil as an anchor, as much as just one part of your damage dealing.

What you've got is a list that's similar to the quad viper or quad fang (skull) list in feel.

My thinking is your vipers will probably end up being your closers.

You just want to make sure that Kavil and the fang deal as much damage as they can before they come off the table.

The nice thing about a list like this is that all of the ships are around 50 points, so there's no clear target priority.

Kavil might be, in that he's going to be the easiest to kill. But if you play a little cagey with him, you can probably get your points worth out of him .

Great insights and advice, thanks!

If you want to make Kavil the lynchpin of your list, maybe downgrade the fang to predator, drop expert handling, and upgrade Kavil's turret to ion. That way he's got 4-5 dice attacks, and can give you uncontested shots on ionized targets.
