Against all odds my FLGS has gotten the BX droids on their release date and am now faced with the conundrum of how to set them up. Shields? Swords? Naked? How are you all planing on running them?
How will you guys be building your BXs?
I was gonna pick up three so that I'd have lots of options. Like on the unit I take the vibrosword armament, the leader could have two swords in hand. And maybe if I go crazy enough, I could mod one BX to have a Grievous amount of sword arms.
The second part is only mostly joking.
I have 3 - one unit will be all shields besides sniper. One will be all blades. And the last will be what's left with a mix.
My biggest concern so far has been how to build the arms for the BXs that will shoot through shields since I cannot mount the shields if I want to paint them since the clear element attaches to the "hand" and I need to leave that off but I am not sure what the arm positions need to be so they line up when I finally put them on. Anyone done this?

You could always just prime the sprues that they come on and paint those before assembly. I don't like this as much, because sometimes my paint scheme idea changes during assembly, but it's still a valid option for these ones.
There's only 4 shields in a box. From what I can see it's either shield arm or sword arm so I plan to magnetize. I'm only picking up clone wars on the side so not going to buy more than one box for now.
I already built two units, and let me share lessons learned with respect to shields:
**DO NOT DEVIATE FROM THE INSTRUCTIONS**
The torsos are all slightly different with respect to the shoulder joints (some have both shoulders forward and close while others are pulled back). The combinations of the torso/arms have to match for the guns to line up through the shields. I learned this the hard way, but because I use plastiweld instead of glue, I was able to move the arm a little bit before it set.
The biggest annoyance for me with shields is that each box only comes with 1 shield that does not have a hole in it. If you are very careful and have multiple boxes from which to pillage, you can make extra full shields by carefully breaking off the piece with the whole in it and replacing it with a full panel from a different shield. If you do this, do not use super glue as it will likely fog up the clear plastic. I prefer Liquid Cement from Model Master for this type of thing (get the metal tip not the plastic one).
Overall these guys were fun to build and in the same vein as the B2's. Hope my tips save you some heartache and have fun!
Edit:
When assembling the shields, it is best to leave the clear part out until after the frame is primed and painted. You will again want to use some form of liquid cement when adding the clear plastic to the frame so it doesn't fog.

Boo-hoo
While this is cool in effect, I would prefer a 3 to 1 ratio without the gun poking through
So
how many units, dfferent types of units can you make from 2 boxes? there's 7 figures in each box, right?
1. Big Unit 4 shields + Rifle figure
2. Big Unit 4 Swords + Bomb figure
1. Little Unit Bomb + extra
2. Little Unit Rifle + extra
That leaves 2 extra figures that you could use to combine into one more Big Unit (3) with either a bomb or rifle from your smaller squad bc you can only run 3 squads at once so far.
Is this the best way to build for maximum options, or would it be better to have 2 Big units with swords, 1 Big Unit with shields and then just have 2 Rifle and 2 Bomb figures?
I could see myself running 2 big squads of swords and 1 small unit
Just trying to maximize the options but only want 2 boxes (I don't like all the extras I got from my Rebel forces that just sit in a box and never get used)

I'm agreeing with you. I think they should make it easier to build, paint and play.
I'm always worried the droids are going to pop off their bases or break and I won't be able to put them back together. I was really bummed to see the rifle trooper running because that figure will never stay together after playing with him and his legs are so skinny that trying to pin the figure might make it worse.

Yeah the Bx are definitely not rough house friendly. If you're handing with building somewhat fancy bases, you could try adding a rock or some piece of terrain next to the foot in the air. Then you can glue the side of the foot to the rock for two points of contact.
"Canopy glue" is a good product for clear plastic pieces. As the name suggests it is intended for gluing canopies on model airplanes. It takes longer to set, but it dries clear with no fogging.
Edit: As for how I plan to actually put them together, well if the shoulder joints are specific I'll probably end up doing a handswap to get one sword and board commando just for RPG usage.

The shoulders really only matter for the shields with the holes in them for the guns to poke through. You can use the lone complete shield on the command torso if you wanted, just make sure you dry fit the sword with it so you’re safe. I did one with the shield and dioxis mine just so my strike teams would have some variety
Mine haven't even shipped yet. I don't know why I bother to pre-order anything for legion.
Edited by player5006253I have assembled them with a mix of equip: some with shield, other with swords. Anyway, the cards will say the real equip of the unit, and I'm not going to buy 10 boxes to have all the possibilities.

True, thinking of magnetise or do like you and make a mix.
Here's all the pose options if anyone is wondering
Pose A: Unit Leader, only option is whether you want to put sword on back or not
Pose B (x2): Shield (cutout for blaster on right) + Blaster, Blaster, Sword
Pose C : Shield (cutout for blaster on left) + Blaster, Blaster, Sword
Pose D (X2): Shield (no cutout) + Blaster, Blaster + Dioxis Mine, Blaster, Optional Sword for back (only 1 shield and 1 Dioxis mine arm for both poses)
Pose E: Sniper, no options
I went for a nice grab bag of options
Edited by MasterShake2
Awesome. So there must be 2 of pose C as well?
I'm not getting more than 2 boxes. Im trying to figure out how to outfit mine. I figure I'm more likely to run swords over shields just due to points and more options down the road (magma guards)
So I'll probably do (w/ 2 boxes)
2 snipers
2 dioxis charges
3-4 shields
3-4 swords
Blasters on whatever is left.
If i run shields, I'll put 2 with shields in the units. I'll probably run 2 man units as well. I like how i can run 2 units from 1 box

Actually it's D that has 2 (but not enough shields or Dioxis to do both in the same pose) edited above

True, but magnetizing these miniatures is also difficult. Small figures, arms like little branches...
4 boxes for 3 units.
Each unit will have a Sab, Sniper, Leader w/sword, 2x Shields, 3Blasters
The reason being I want to have 2 shields for when i run the unit with the upgrade, but Iwant no shield models if I am not running the upgrade
I started assembling these yesterday, and I've found the shield arm to be a real problem to pose right. I had similar problems with B1 arms all being attached to their gun, and this feels 10 times worse. As previously said, you can't glue the shield on to the model before painting it, and that means I have to pose the model without the shield beforehand; I've found this to be a very trying process. The pieces are tiny, and the shield itself keeps falling off while I try to maneuver the arms just right to have the gun socket into the shield slot and the arm into the shoulder joint at the same time.
Does anyone have tips for this?

The best way I came up with is, paint the whole Thing in sub-assemblies and varnish everything seperately. Then glue the shield into its frame, glue the arm to the shield, let it all dry. Stick the gun through the Shield ans glue both arms simultaneously
I haven't clipped anything out yet, so I may change my mind, but I think I'll skip the shields for aesthetic reasons. Plus they rarely use them on Clone Wars.
If anything, I might do just one shield commando -- the one without the gun hole.

I mostly ignored the frame when dry-fitting the shield to the arm and gun, guesstimating the rough location for the arm by looking at how the gun would sit pointed straight ahead and then making small adjustments as I stuck the gun into the hole and the shield into it's socket (since it's the shield itself that sticks to the hand) and it seems to have worked well enough so far. If nothing else the arms are thin enough that they can be bent a tiny bit for it all to fit together once painted.
On another topic I'm curious if someone could tell me if you can use the Arm action while engaged? I assume not.. but could be a fun thing to do if you can

I guess you mean the Aim Action. Yes you can Aim in melee.
