Droids vs. Clones: Suggestions?

By Takanuva, in X-Wing Epic Play

Hi guys, long time collector and very casual player here. Have bought all the epic ships through the years but never really played epic. I was hoping to have a Clone Wars era game with my father-in-law this weekend, but I'm having some difficulty finding list suggestions for epic Republic or Separatists. Here's what we have at our disposal:

1 Epic conversion kit for the time being (so enough bases for one huge ship each) and 1 of each huge ship.

Republic: 4 ARC-170s, 2 Aethersprites, 2 Torrents, 1 Naboo fighter

Separatists: 6 Vulture Droids, 2 Nantex, 1 Belbullab, 1 Sith Infiltrator, 1 Hyena Bomber

Hoping to make both lists relatively equal in terms of power level and with one huge ship each.I was thinking ~200 points for each huge ship and ~300 points of generics? Not sure if Aethersprites are even worth bringing to an epic game (?) given aces seem to just get demolished. I could also be convinced to buy 1 or 2 more expansions in the near future to fill things out more if needed.

Any suggestions?

(EDIT: If the above is nowhere near adequate for a proper epic game, we could just play classic factions. We have around a billion X wings, TIE fighters, MG ties, Scyks, Z-95s, A-Wings, etc and probably at least 2-4 of most other ships between the two of us).

So, and please excuse the fact that I am not a Republic player and basically only flirted with the Separatists before realising I couldn't justify a third full faction, it looks to me like you've got the makings of two Epic lists even without the huge ships. Do definitely include the Huge ships though, unless you're wanting to do multiple games where you ramp things up and only include the Huge ships in subsequent.

A wing of Arcs plus a collection of the other ships, a couple of aces for some ace duelling in amid all the chaos would probably work, and if you're looking for more casual lists anyway then it probably doesn't matter if some of the choices aren't as powerful. For the Separatists a wing of the Vultures, and then mix in some of the others.

Pure points-wise the Republic should expect to spend nearer 200 on their huge ship, as they have access to a true Corvette in the CR-90, while the CROC for the Separatists will flat out be cheaper and there are a load of recommendations re why you don't want to load it up as much, however bring Maul, maybe Grievous and as much of the rest as you can and it should still be pretty even.

Apologies I don't know enough faction specifics to give you a full list, but you've got more than enough stuff to make some fun clone era epic lists. In your list making just consider ensuring both sides have something to combat the enemy wing and something to combat the huge ship and you're mostly there.

Awesome, thanks for the advice!

Took a loooooong time to figure out what we were doing with epic, took our time and played for basically the entire afternoon/evening. We ended up going with the following two 500 point lists and it seemed to work out pretty well:

Republic - Loaded CR90 (from this: http://thenerdstreamera.blogspot.com/2020/01/musings-on-epic-listbuilding-cr90.html ), 4x ARC-170 (with Dedicated and Vet tail gunner), 2x naked Torrents and a Naboo fighter (with proton torpedoes).

Separatists - Minimalistic C-ROC (Bombardment specialists and ion cannon battery), Fat Maul Infiltrator (with HLC, Dooku, Palpatine, Title), Grievous Belbullab, 6x Vulture Droids (with Energy shells) and 2x Nantex (with Ensnare).

I think the heavily loaded CR90 seemed like an appropriate use of points for a 500 point game. Between the 2 batteries and the primary side-arc weapon, it was able to shoot 6 times per turn(!) which really did a number on the Vultures. Likewise, huge amounts of dice from the vultures nuked the CR90 pretty quickly.

While the vultures and the CR90 jousted, Maul did a very slow lazy lap around the opposite side of the board, stayed cloaked at the beginning and overall just stayed alive while not doing much. Once the Vulture swarm and CR90 had nearly kamikaze'd each other, the C-ROC came in ,rammed a few ARCs and finished off the CR90. After that Maul, Greivous and the C-ROC basically mopped everything else up and it basically became a landslide in favor of the Seps.

Overall I would probably like to have a few more ships with fewer upgrades on the Separatist side (maybe drop the shells, drop Grievous and and a bunch more Vultures +/- Bombers). I think Grievous and the Nantexes only survived because the CR90 was (understandably) focusing on mopping up vultures. Otherwise I'm not sure too many fragile aces are that great for epic(?). I was super skeptical about so many points on Fat Maul, but with Cloaking, Dooku and Palp as crew, 3 recurring force tokens and dishing out stress to every attacker... he does seem extremely survivable even in a huge ship game. The single naboo fighter seemed a bit spurious and didn't do much.

TLDR: Awesome match, reasonably well balanced. If I were to buy a few more ships I would probably change the lists to:

Republic: CR90 (Loadout from Nerdstreamera blog), 4x ARC-170, 4x Torrent

Separatists: C-ROC (Agree with @PartridgeKing , keep it minimal), 8-10 Vultures, Fat Maul, 2-4 Hyena Bombers, (Nantex?)

Glad to hear it went well! It sounds like a good game. I think you're right, aces are a weird one. If your opponent has a few pieces that aren't in wings that you want to get rid of then they might pull their weight more. Were the bulk of the non-CR90 Republic gunning for Maul or generally tearing it up in a few places?

The Torrents and Naboo went after Maul (unsuccessfully as he was running, cloaked and dishing out stress to whoever attacked him) while the ARCs just sort of jousted with everyone else. In hindsight, Republic probably would have done better if he had focused all guns on Maul from the start.
