Striking as Void

By klatschi0212, in Rules Questions

I just wanted to hear your opinion on Striking as Void, which seems pretty rad to me (it is a high Kata, I know, however, this is really heavy in my opinion).

Quote

When doing a Void Melee or Ranged check, you may use OPPs as follows:
OPP: Immediately swich to different stance.

So let's assume, I do my roll and keep as many strife as possible; I do not suffer the strife due to the fact that I am in Void Stance. I then use the OPP to go in fire stance and have the strife count as bonus successes.

According to page 23, the order of resolving dice is:

  1. Exploding Successes
  2. take strife(whch you don't because of Void Stance)
  3. take Opps (swicharoo to fire stance)
  4. total successes

According to page 251, fire says: "When you succeed on a check, you count as having one additional bonus success for each Strife Symbol on your kept dice."

Am I wrong with my interpretation? It seems quite potent to me, especially in duels, where you cannot stop Void from happening.

Yeah, it seems kosher to me. Granted, it is a rank 5 Kata, so it's not necessarily broken. And it's different than the wording is indeed from the Hiruma Scout.

The Hiruma Scout allows you to change stances AFTER you performed an Attack action, so the same thing can't be accomplished with that school ability.

Thanks 🙂

It is a high ranked kata and a lot of Bushis can buy it on Rank 4 already. Just wanted a second reader since it just seemed pretty odd.

The Hiruma-Scout has an awesome defensive technique though. Also nice to see that a lvl 5 Hiruma could switch stances two times - start in Void, deal damage with Fire and then switch to Earth 😄

Honestly, it would be better to change to Air, TN +2 to hit can become quite difficult and can pretty much make anyone give up on using certain other kata.

Its also worth noting that it's "immediately" - so you can spend to switch, then spend opportunities for a kata in that stance.

The "immediately" clause allows for some very fun multi-stance combinations! Such as the Void op to reduce the TN of the next check you make if it's in stance X, and then another op to swap to X. Sometimes that's better than (Op)(Op) to crit. Striking as Void is a great kata. You can swap to fire stance for massive strife-free hits, air or earth for defensive needs, or even water if you want to squeeze out a second action after the first is done strifelessly.
