I'm wondering if this game would work better as a Wrestling theme - more "Nacho Libre" and less "Karate Kid".

Yeah, "crowd value" seems less relevant in a respected martial arts tournament. Wrestling seems more appropriate. I don't know if you still would want to work in the "elements."

Alternatively, the elements could be the focus. There isn't really any specific mention of weaponry, if I recall correctly, and the rock-paper-scissors nature of comparison matches the theme of the elemental progression.
