Restarting

By zhentil, in X-Wing

Hello everyone. I used to play rather a lot. But when 2.0 was announced and even before that I started to stop playing. I have now found another group that has started up playing again. So my question is, where to start again. I know there are 7 factions and it's not like the old days where you could collect EVERYTHING lol. So just any suggestions for a new but still old player.

Well the Republic and Separatist faction starters are a great way to go of your into either of those. The new core is still a great value too, especially if you need all the tools and dice again. Bit it's possible to buy maneuver Templates/ range rulers, dice, and damage decks seperate now so it's not as much of a must have unless your going Rebel or Empire. Any faction your looking at in particular?

well i do have some of my ships still, I could get the basic 3 conversion kits.

How are the other two factions, Separatists and the Galactic Republic

There is nothing new for rebels outside of the conversion kit and the Hotshots and aces pack. If you want to get up to speed on a faction, that would be the one to do.

They're actually a good value all things considered. Especially if you can fill it out by picking up some used first Ed models, or first Ed models off your stores sale rack. If you're going with conversion, the new core set OR the seperate plastic maneuver tool set will be required, since the centerline on the templates is now a core mechanic. You'll also need a new damage deck. Like I said those come seperate if you want too. But both tools and a deck might be something you can bum off the group your in if they have some extras.

So after that are you looking for your first new squad setup as a goal?

Both new factions are pretty decent right now. We did just have a small points change for the year, but nothing too drastic for those factions comes to my mind at least. They're also getting a bunch of new stuff here in a few months.

Congress? Really auto type?

Yes, I am intrigued with the Separatists and good old Empire lol.

Two (or even three 😆 ) seperatist starters is a great start to their faction. The Vultures are pretty core strength right now. A Vulture single pack to get a fifth vulture and all the named pilots would be recommended next, two singles is nice to have if your into it for 6-8 total, a full swarm. The Nantex might be a good pick up as a single? Play with it and see what you want to do in terms of extras with it. It's a tricky one. Hyenas are cool, maybe two are in your future to assignment the Droid swarm. The Sith infiltrator is cool and fun, but maybe not that great competitively that I know of. Your mileage there may vary. Soon you can get the Tri-fighter and HMP Gunship, so save some cash to get those.

Empire is easy convert, Vader, ... Stuff. And enjoy!

Awesome thank you for your help guys

awesome, glad to have you back!

Your dice, obstacles, and ship models will still work but you will need a damage deck and templates.

FFG sells wonderful damage deck add-ons linked in this article

the official templates aren't for everyone so I linked some nice third party ones that would be tournament legal (don't know where you're located, CogOTwo is in the UK, others are US)

as for ships, you may want to be aware of hyperspace vs extended format. All ships legal in hyperspace (the curated, "competitive" format) are legal in extended but not vice-versa. for the most part, hyperspace is the new-released stuff, and extended is the ships that were only released in first edition and come in the conversion kits.

Personally I find the four smallest factions the most fun, and those are the ones most likely to get new content in future, but totally up to you. All factions can fly a variety of playstyles of list.

One last note, we are in a global pandemic... if your locals are playing in person that's neat, but you might not be able to get a lot of IRL play. That being said, it's a great time to check out new stuff for free, online! Tabletop Simulator is the most common online X-Wing option. You'll have to buy the game (first link), then subscribe to the mod (second link). You can find games on the official Discord server (third link).

if your computer can't run TTS or if you prefer a more old-school top-down (2D) view, VASSAL also has an X-Wing mod that's great.

And to give you a leg up, here's a quick squad you could expect to see out of just the two Seperatist Faction Starters. I had to make sure for my own sanity you could still build one full list out of them. Easily lots you could do with just the two.

Welcome Back! (198/200)

It really depends on play style. In 1.0 I collected everything. Now with 2.0 I am finding I have drifted to Interceptor style dials and as such I have stopped buying into the Rebels and Resistance. (I’m not buying 5 RZ-2’s 😉 ). But with the latest news releases, my excitement* for Republic and Separatists has gone up another gear. So far I’m a FO player with Imperial and Scum to break it up. But by November if the release dates are right, I will be deep into the Clone Wars factions.

*Excitement is a very loose term when talking about a plastic space ship game.

Seppies is a great way to get back to 2.0. I’d pick up two of the squadron packs plus 2 blisters of vulture droids for a total of 6 droids and 2 belbullabs. After that, scoop up a hyena or two. The hyenas feel similar to tie bombers with a twist. Vultures are your basic spam, and the Bulbs are your support craft or flankers. Greivous really likes flanking.

infiltrator is pretty fun. I’ve enjoyed both Dooku and O66 pilots out of it. Nantex I feel you can kind of skip as it’s not in a good place - it was built around an NPE shenanigans and then points priced into oblivion if you bring the tools to do the shenanigans and not good at all without that tool (unless you swarm them cheap, maybe).

Then start buying new content as it comes out, because Seppies are quickly becoming the “our stuff flies weird” faction.

This is good advice. Only part I disagree on is the nantex - it is rapidly proving itself as a cheap ship, particularly in swarms. If you need a 28-30pt filler ship and you don't need more droids in the squad for networked calc, the nantex is a great pick

Even then, I don't think it's worth going in super hard, as it could easily go back the other way in 6 months if FFG decide they don't like the new spam lists.

Agreed. As a new player, I'd buy one if I was interested to give it a go, but it's not at the top of the list like vultures and hyenas

great, i am excited to play again

OH i was wondering about the damage decks, can you just use the one in the starter set or do the other ones like Separatists Damage Deck needed or is better.

You can use the one in the 2.0 core set. The faction-specific decks have the same content, just flavored for their theme. Of course, you want one of each. ;)
