Help: My Son is a Maniac

By BlastyMcBlasterFace, in X-Wing

My son flies his ships like a maniac. He flies them really fast and out of control: 4k-ing over crap and getting himself blown up and stuff.

Control, control, he must learn control.

He needs to learn how to fly sloooooooooow and in some semblance of a formation before he can do that stuff.

I need a list that will reward him greatly for this kind of disciplined flying. Can you help?

Oh, I need to mention: he is EXCELLENT at remembering triggers. So something with formation flying and triggers. That is not my style, but I think it is his.

I had a few thoughts:

* 2 proton torp E-Wings with Wedge or Luke

* Chopper, Jan, Braylen

* Jan, Wedge, AP5, Braylen

I've been stuck on Rebels, but maybe I'm wrong there. Help please, this is not my forte'.

The Republic has Dedicated and similar, triggering when friendlies are in position.

That might help a bit.

Similar to Aetherer above, try Selfless if you like rebels. Something like this?

Biggs Darklighter (48)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Ship total: 48 Half Points: 24 Threshold: 3

Gold Squadron Veteran (32)
Selfless (3)
Dorsal Turret (2)
R4 Astromech (2)

Ship total: 39 Half Points: 20 Threshold: 4

Wedge Antilles (55)
Squad Leader (14)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Ship total: 69 Half Points: 35 Threshold: 3

Red Squadron Veteran (41)
Selfless (3)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Ship total: 44 Half Points: 22 Threshold: 3

Total: 200

I actually had some moderate success flying this in previous metas and have since moved away from it a bit, but it's a great primer on formation flying. Games also always felt close as the constant damage spreading meant that all your ships usually ended the game on low health, but it also makes those X-Wings super durable.

You could have him fly a CIS swarm? That would force him to be in range one and have some sort of formation, but there arn't a whole lot of triggers with that. Or, you could give him a defender and let him just do his thing ;)

Two defenders and maybe Rhymer with ordinance?

Sinker Swarm with Dedicated Blues. Add Odd Ball and Synced Console if you like.

Rebels with Jake, Dutch, Saw, Esege, Kanan, etc.

Howling Inferno Swarm is good for this too.

Sloane Swarm actually rewards crazy flying

Meh, let him do his thing for now. He sounds like an absolute baller. Paul Heaver pulled a 4 straight over a rock I remember on stream once. Experimentation shouldn't be quashed. When he's ready and wants to try something slower, he'll do it kinda on his own or ask for some help. For insight, check out Vygotskys 'zone of proximal development'. Sounds to me like he's having fun in his current zone? He will likely eventually wander outside of it.

Or Y'know, just give him some A-wings. If he wants to go crazy, shoot. Then he'll REALLY have some fun. I know I do! Lol 😂

Funny how apostrophes work, ain't it?

I'd do the A-Wing if I had 5... but I have 1.

However, the Sloan Swarm that @ClassicalMoser mentioned sounds good.

How is this? 7 protected points.

No no no, your still thinking too methodical, too slow. Make it MORE heavy metal, all the way to 11 lol 😂 . Made this riff off an old list I used to goof off with, that yours reminded me of. Sai and title have a great simple synergy that will reward some simple stuff he'll* just happen into, and Turr(bo) is one of my favorite weird pilots who teaches you to sometimes hold off on stressing out but doesn't really penalize you for not doing so if you didn't want to.

YOLO BALLER BROS (199/200)
=========================
Lambda-class Shuttle: Lieutenant Sai (47 + 4)

TIE Interceptor: Turr Phennir (42)

TIE Interceptor: Alpha Squadron Pilot (31)

TIE Interceptor: Alpha Squadron Pilot (31)

TIE/ln Fighter: Academy Pilot (22)

TIE/ln Fighter: Academy Pilot (22)

*Got that apostrophe that time lol

Losing a bunch of games will correct the behavior. At least it did for me when I was learning the game and decided a 2-k turn with my b-wing on the opening maneuver was an excellent idea.

Seriously, if he’s winning or close to winning let them keep going. If they’re losing easily because of these mistakes, then it’s part of the learning curve. If he’s losing but still is having fun doing crazy stuff nobody expects then he’s mastered the game more than most will be able to. Let a fun Star Wars game be... fun.

mmmmm.... maybe quad phantom or 4 star vipers .... stuff like this want to fly slow and can stall to attack only at the right moment.

also snr inqiuisitors can be ok maybe whith prorockets

The E wings and wedge are a good plan. Until you get hit with a 5 straight boost +lock proton torp round 1.

Dash Rendar...

there you go!

Okay, okay, okay.

I need an alpha strike list. The little guy is starting to get discouraged because his sister keeps beating him, and she's not shy about rubbing it in his face.

Can anyone help me with a good alpha strike list?

this is a beast:

Starkiller Base Pilot (58) General Hux (6) Jamming Beam (0) Advanced Sensors (10) Electronic Baffle (2) Ship total: 76 Half Points: 38 Threshold: 6

Zeta Squadron Survivor (32) Concussion Missiles (6) Passive Sensors (2) Ship total: 40 Half Points: 20 Threshold: 3

Zeta Squadron Survivor (32) Concussion Missiles (6) Passive Sensors (2) Ship total: 40 Half Points: 20 Threshold: 3

Zeta Squadron Survivor (32) Concussion Missiles (6) Passive Sensors (2) Ship total: 40 Half Points: 20 Threshold: 3

Total: 196

Heck'n no lol! The whole point of modern SW is strong females. I'm on her side 😆 🤣

Dutch Vander with proton torpedoes

At 53 points, he fits in any rebel squad

I’m not really much of an alpha strike player, but I would think 2 Knave Squadron E-Wings with proton torpedoes, R3 Astromechs, and Fire Control Systems would do the trick. Hey can pull a 5 straight, boost into a target lock, and then most maneuvers the enemy can pull will put them square in torpedo range. 3 agility and 6 total health also means the E-Wings should survive to shoot.

Complete the list with 66 points of whatever to taste.

Odd Ball with Mag-Pulse and synced console.

Then count to 200 on dedicated synced concussion blues.

Jendon with 3-4 Proton Torp Scimitars.

5x Passive missile Zetas.

7x procket headhunters.

5x APT/Procket/Ion torp + Proton bomb TIE Bombers (loads of fun)

4x passive proton N-1s.

Heightened Perception inquisitors or CLT Jedi.

This list is a lot of fun to fly. The idea is to engage at range 3 in a spot where Jake will be able to get both E-wings a focus without taking too many shots himself because you're kinda hanging him out to dry. On the first engagement both your E-wings will have lock, focus, evade, shooting Protorps at range 3 into the same target with 2 or fewer greens hopefully deleting it because 2 hits and 2 crits from each protorp should be common at minimum. Being in a tight formation and planning for Jake's barrel roll boost require some good planning.

Gavin Darklighter (60)
Trick Shot (4)
Fire-Control System (2)
Proton Torpedoes (13)
R3 Astromech (3)

Rogue Squadron Escort (51)
Trick Shot (4)
Fire-Control System (2)
Proton Torpedoes (13)
R3 Astromech (3)

Ship total: 73 Half Points: 37 Threshold: 3

Jake Farrell (36)
Crack Shot (2)
Proton Rockets (6)

Ship total: 44 Half Points: 22 Threshold: 2

Also, you can try 4 Resistance A-Wings with proton rockets. It’s not quite as powerful as a well flown 5 A-Wing list, and I wouldn’t necessarily call it an alpha strike list, but it does seem right up your son’s alley.

Piloting an A-Wing list is like corralling a bunch of squirrels on meth. They can fly in truly wild and unpredictable ways, but stress management and relying on blues, plus the fragility of the ship and the bullseye arc requirement for rockets will help him learn planning.

What is she actually flying? That might help gauge what sort of list would work.

Rebels, as has already mentioned, are probably the most straightforward option for an alpha strike. Dutch, Wedge, and go from there.

Anakin in the y-wing or N1 is a monster that can delete ships fast, and as he's good at remembering triggers this republic alpha can serve him well. It rewards steady flying to keep dedicated online and catch people in at long range to fire the torps. (Once he starts to learn control, you can sub out the bravo and seismic charges for CLT plo. This gives you a hard hitting joust block plus a sneaky ace that can clean up in the endgame, but he must be careful or he'll get plo killed early).

I know the other posters were suggesting sloane as a way to lean in to his whacky flying, but Sloane still requires some control - you have to protect the sloane carrier and keep your ships in range. The sloane swarm you posted (lambda, 2 academies, 3 alphas) looks solid. If he wants a real speedy brain bender then he can try the Sutcliffe Sloane Swarm (sloane on a reaper, 4 academies, 2 alphas). If he wants something with less ships but more triggers then the RAC sloane swarm is another option - it needs the ties to fly as a screen for RAC.

Control doesn't have to mean boring slow ships, but it does mean he should be trying to get actions on all of his ships each turn as his #1 goal.

Okay, the end of the story.

After trying a number of different things (thank you @Sandrem for your simulator) we finally settled on two naked Defenders and Redline with Proton Torps.

He went 2/1 and finished third. Now, it was a home based tournament and it wasn't super competitive, but like I said the poor little guy had just been getting beaten over and over again. So winning two games was great for him, especially considering one of them was against his sister who had just beaten him the day before.

Sounds like he should play ships with a sensor slot and take collision detector..
