The only change I can see (which actually makes Ion worse against Shields) is you now apply Dodge and Cover before determining how many Shield tokens needed to be flipped due to Ion. Previously, you could end up having to flip Shield tokens from an attack that is completely cancelled by Cover and/or Dodge... So that said I'm not sure why that makes Ion more worth it?

You always did that, though. You decided when to flip shield tokens after dodge and cover before you rolled defense dice. When would you "end up having to flip Shield tokens from an attack that is completely cancelled by Cover and/or Dodge?" I don't understand how that could happen, and what would be forcing you to do so? You know that flipping a shield token is always a choice, right? You can just choose to roll the full damage. It sounds like you were/are playing them extremely incorrectly. The next time you do an attack involving shields you guys should do it with the RRG open and follow it word for word.

I agree with you. I don't think ion changed at all from how I understood it to work previously. I guess dodges are forced to be used now, whereas they weren't before, but it was probably pretty edge case to have a dodge and not use it prior to flipping a shield. A nice summary per the 5th Trooper Article:

Why would be forced to use dodges?

To be honest I have never played with shields, let alone had Ion and shields interact in addition to getting my attack steps confused. I was under the mistaken impression that in the old wording, Ion caused shield tokens to flip Prior to Dodge and Cover being applied (Ion forces the tokens to be flipped for no benefit).

Re-reading the old Shield token wording I now remember that "roll defence die" is after Dodge and Cover, so there is no effective change.

Aha, I see what you were saying. I didn't understand you were referencing using Ion, thus why I was confused about "having" to flip shield tokens.

Yeah, it also wasn't a well crafted post over all. Very much a mental misstep, that I think was brought on by the impending beginning of my grad classes.
